No offense, but what does sand have to do with air?

On the new episode of Avatar shown today, it shows Sandbenders jump on to Appa, but they seemd to jump a lot higher, and looked like they used, well, air! Could they be Airbenders? Also, Appa finds someone at one of the Air Temples that could tell him where Aang was. Was that person an Air Nomad? I hope we find out soon!

My theory is that the sandbenders are just earthbenders who specialize in working with sand.?? Like Toph said in the episode, she doesn't like sand because it's not as firm as the earth she feels and bends.?? Because they live in the desert, they may have just adjusted to the loose dirt.

sand benders are earth benders, didn't you see toph bending sand? if they were air then toph probably couldn't... athough that does pose a great question

I think sandbenders are strictly earth. They might've jumped higher from pushing themselves up with sand. Maybe.

Okay, for the last time: Sandbenders are Earthbenders! They have just adapted to using sand since, duh, they live in the desert (which has a lot of sand)! If you've forgotten, sand is just crushed up quartz and rock. The Sandbenders used the sand to propell themselves up onto Appa. And they can't be Airbenders since, well, why the heck would they be out in the open? Second, the show isn't called "Avatar: The Last Airbender Plus Some Other Ones."

First off: I agree. with you, KilalaRose.
Second off: Couldn't the Sandbenders be using a combination of Airbending moves with the sand? Iroh did say he learned how to redirect lightning from Waterbending moves. Maybe its the same principle idea?

Iroh created a moved based on principles from waterbending.?? Theoretically, a waterbender would not be able to redirect lightning since creating lightning is a firebending skill.??

The sandbenders used sand to increase jumping ability.?? Presumably, they used the sand to levitate themselves much like they can levitate a rock.?? You can tell they bend sand because they used it to anchor themselves when Appa tried to fly away just like a waterbender will form ice around their feet to anchor themselves.

Even though they ARE basically earthbenders, sandbenders don't seem to be as firm and strong as earthbenders. They seem more related to airbenders or waterbenders, because the sand isn't as firm. The sand is made from smashed up rock and earthy stuff, and it has the ummmm i dont really know, but it just seems like it is closely related to water or air. Their bending gives the appearance that they are really airbenders, but it is just the style of kung fu that they used.
    Thank You. The End.

Quoted from the www.nick.com website link is:

    Sandbenders

These are Earthbenders who have adapted to life in the Si Wong Desert. Their skills differ greatly from those of ordinary Earthbenders. As their name indicates, sandbenders bend sand. They move quickly out in the desert, thanks to their specialized "sand-sailers". Since economic opportunities are limited in the desert, Sandbenders get by however they can. They've been known to scavenge for dead animals, or even steal from passing travelers at the nearby cantina.

I hope people don't just ask questions for the sake of asking questions. It's possible there are still some hiding airbenders somewhere. It's possible the guru guy is air nomad. But just because and earthbender "looks" like he is using air because he throws dirt around doesn't make him an airbender.

After seeing more of the sandbenders at work in Appa's Lost Days, I have come to believe that sandbending really is earthbending with some waterbending forms and airbending forms added in. What may be up for discussion is if the sandbenders actually learned (and passed on through the generations [since airbenders are presumed extinct]) skills from other benders in person, or if they figured it out for themselves through trial and error.
