Yeah most people probably will abandon him; Some fangirls even admit they like him ONLY for his looks.

I really liked the hat that Zuko was wearing in the beginning, (chinaman hat) I think he should go for that look more often now that he doesn't have as much hair as he use to.

And I like how Aang went crazy and completely destroyed teh place with his earthbending avatar spirit action. I'm a bit more intrested in earthbending now, but the Zuko/Azula fight has me completely hooked on firebending. That was an awesome fight, very realistic in how it was fought out in a way.

Ohh and look at my signature... thats my favorite quote of all time next to the

"Ahh amzaing how being stranded on a raft for 3 weeks with no food and no water while hungery vultures waited to pick your liver out can make you a little tense" quote (Iroh)

The hair or top-knot is a samurai symbol of honor. To cut it off or have it cut off is to have your honor taken away.

Hi, I just have to stick in a few more comments-- can't help it, I drank some of Aang's tea

    1) It is indeed Azula, POOLDUDE YOU ARE THE MAN! Just had to point that out.

    2) OK, I'm afraid that every time I see Zuko I'm gonna get an image of a little girl with blonde curly locks. Get it? No? Remember "It's A Wonderful Life?"

mellomuse: *digs in pocket* "ZuZu's petals! There they are! No, wait... that's just a stick of gum... where'd the wrapper go?"

    3) Did anyone notice that when Aang was having the dream sequences, whenever firebenders were involved he sort of switched places with them? He was looking at his "La-Zilla" self from the point of view of a FN soldier (on the ship), and when Zuko was in his dream it was spectator-Aang who got knocked off the ship instead. In fact, Zuko looked like he was almost ready to do airbending and Aang looked like he was about to do firebending.
    (images courtesy of firebender.com)

Doesn't Zuko look like he's about to whip up an airball?
    Maybe it's just me.

    4) The new fashion statements all around- Yeah! OK, Sokka looks nice sans shirt. Like the short sleeves and kimonos. (Those massage guys made me laugh, they were having a little too much fun.) And the new hairdos at the end-- it was sad, but Yay! Unbelieveable! I actually gasped.

Maybe that is why... anybody have an idea?

In the Tokugawa Era of Japan, the ponytail was an actual law for certain people. by cutting off their hair, I believe they were doing the equivalent of defying the lord. but this is just me transporting japanese culture into Avatar.

Feudal Japan is one of my 3 great History subjects(mostly because Samurai rock)

actually, no it not. I got two different things mixed up. The Queue(ponytail) is chinese culture. origianlly used to pick out the remaining members of a fallen dynasty(can't remember which one) though my thesis still stands on the defying their lord part, it was not Japanese.

LADIES AND GENTLEMEN ~ WHY FIREBENDERS CAN BEND ELECTRICITY I'm settling this scientifically ONCE AND FOR ALL!

I know that there is a spiritual aspect to bending, but there is also science involved *pulls over a chalkboard*

Iroh No power in firebending comes from the breath not the muscle, the breath becomes engery in the body and extends past the limbs to become FIRE!

Ok so heres the magic word - Energy

Unless for firbender to turn breath into energy the process of celluar respiration must be invovled

Wiki Quote "In a fire there is a massive uncontrolled release of energy as light and heat. Cellular respiration is the same process but it occurs in gradual steps that result in the conversion of the energy stored in glucose to usable chemical energy in the form of ATP."

And unless for cellular respiration to occur, there must be oxygen to make that energy.

So that explains how the breath becomes energy in the body. And firebenders must possess the special ability to control that process subconsiously (yeah obvious)

So --- why in the heck can they control lightning?

Lightning and any Electricity for that matter is also a form of energy. And suprise suprise

Wiki Quote "Flames can conduct electricity, as a small portion of any fire is ionized. This has been demonstrated in the laboratory and also in large wildfires that occur in the vicinity of power lines. This ability to conduct electricity is due to it's partially plasma nature."

Firebenders breath in... cellular respiration takes place... oxygen becomes engery... firebenders control the energy past the limbs to fire...they can control electricity too because flames can conduct electricity... both contain plasma... and a firebender can control both

There is no way to argue that science... Flames and Electricty are both engery and are realted due the fact that they contain similar strucures... there ionized and plasmatic

But how they subconsciously control the fire in the body and the fact that they can draw power from the sun and the comets are purely spiritual

I should start my own thread for all this but I'm afraid PoolDude might lock it... I"m going to spew some more science while I'm on a roll

A SEMI-ANSWER AS TO WHY WATERBENDERS CAN CONTROL WATER

Yue - our ancestors saw how the moon spirit pushed and pulled the tides and learned from him.

(Oh and I'm really lazy so I'm doing Wikipedia quotes and copying junk out of my bio book, but it explains it, I'm just pieceing the information together)

We know that the tides are controlled by the moon's gravitational forces. This explains why the tides are stronger at night than in the daytime. Well taking that piece of knowledge lets apply it to waterbenders

Wiki Quote "Since tides generate currents of conducting fluids within the Earth's magnetic field, they affect in return the magnetic field itself."

    How to waterbenders control water?

I feel it has to do with the same maganatism that exists between the moon and water as Yue mentioned. Only this time the indiviual is now in the balance with the moon and water.

The magic word here is magnatism

All materials are affected by magnatism in some way, some more than others (ex. Iron)

Wiki Quote - "Magnetism occurs in living creatures (biomagnetism), and many use it to navigate. In humans magnetite crystals in the skull are sometimes claimed to serve as a magnetoreceptor, but there is evidence that in fact the red blood cells form the human magnetoreceptor and magnetoanalyzer."

So magnatism does exist in some way in the human body.

Now useing that information about the tides from earilier, we can apply it to controlling water (how they possess the gift to control the magantism is spiritual)

Waterbenders can use the magnatism in there body in harmony with the magantism generated by the moon to control water. That is why there waterbending is stronger at night than in the day time... for the same reason that the tides are weaker in the day time.

Wiki Quote "The tide is the regular rising and falling of the ocean's surface caused by changes in gravitational forces external to the Earth. The main changing gravitational field is due to the Moon while a lesser field is caused by the Sun."

Yeah I jsut had a scooby snack with a red bull... but anywho

Taking this knowledge... Freakish Child was absolulty right! You see... I've explained how it is possible for those gifted individuals to control there elements, BUT unless for them to do that (control the engery and magnatism like in fire and water) there has to be a inner spiritual aspect that allows them to do that. So if you think about it there really isn't much genetics involved.

Still haven't got the slightest clue as to how airbenders and earthbenders do it... I haven't heard any good quotes that would point me in the right direction

Airbenders use Aerokenesis. although it is impossible for a human to use it, many scientists have succesfully created many machines that have the ability. In the show, the airbenders have the ability to manipulate the wind into there will. this is probably caused by the fictional, spiritual portion of the show combined with real Aerokenesis. it has a lot to do with spinning the air in an enclosed section at an increased rate. Energy might me able to help the Airbenders do it from inside there body(probably the lungs, as a sneeze can propel Aang into the air, plus air can be stored there) and unleashed through the designated part of the body. Since spinning air in your lungs is impossible for us, this part is contributed to spiritual powers.

That might explain the airbenders powers.
