Before you say "This should go in the main bending thread", I feel that this topic is going to deviate far enough from what that thread is to merit its existence.
What I'd like to do here is compile a visual guide for all of the different bending moves we've been privy to so far in Avatar. Water, Earth, Fire, Air. All moves. When I say "move" I mean a unique technique easily identified in the series. For instance, the Air Scooter, or the Water Whip. Some moves have been named by the creators themselves, but most have none. I'd like to catalogue them here, and have a nice complete visual guide in the end, preferabley organized under the first posts.
Assuming this won't get locked, I don't want the thread to just be a jumble of bending pictures, and instead look nice and be easily navigated by any who wish to know -all- of the moves of Avatar's great benders.
PLEASE ONLY WATERBENDING MOVES FOR THE TIME-BEING! Thanks!
Got to do this one piece at a time
My format is going to be like this, using the simple Air scooter as an example:
AIRBENDING
NAME: Air Scooter
DESCRIPTION: Air is whirled around into a spinning ball. The airbender then must balance on it like a top, enabling the airbender to 'ride' on it, increasing their speed and allowing them to climb up verticle surfaces and even float in mid-air for a time.
USER(S): Aang, Aang's Airbending friends whom he taught it to.
As for what I want from posters of the thread: Any move that you know of that hasn't been added yet please post a picture LINK, NOT an HTML Message (One in [IMG] tags). This is so I can add an entry to the guide in an organized manner and avoid random bending pictures flying all over the place. I do NOT want generic moves submitted. "Splashing water" and "Bigger splash of water" or "Throwing a rock" and "Throwing multiple rocks" really don't have a place. In addition, add what user or users of the move are known, and suggestions on names for moves that have none. Also, please include any credit due for the picture, if you ripped it from a site or whatnot. Otherwise, I will simply credit you.
So, to start out: WATER MOVE SUBMISSIONS ONLY!

WATERBENDING
SEASON 1
#1 NAME: The Push and Pull
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The most basic of waterbending moves. Involes just pushing and pulling the water back and forth, feeling the 'flow'. Keystone in all waterbending mentality.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, Probably ALL other waterbenders.
-
# 2 NAME: Streaming the Water
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: Another basic move, this involves pulling out a portion of the water into the air and moving it around, manipulating it again allowing the user to feel the flow of the water.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, Probably ALL other waterbenders.
-
#3 NAME: The Water Wave
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: Pulling water up to form a powerful wave, using gravity to pull the water back down with force.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, most intermediate waterbenders.
-
#4 NAME: The Single Water Whip
Credit Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The user forms water into a ball and then stretches it into a whip-like stream, using this momentum to lash at an enemy.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, most intermediate waterbenders. Learned from the Waterbending Scroll in S1E9.
-
#5 NAME: Dual Whirlpooling
Credit Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: Two waterbenders are needed for this move. Using a combined pushing and pulling of water, the benders created two whirlpools going in opposite directions. In The Waterbending Scroll (S1E9), this is used by Katara and Aang to keep their ship from falling down a waterfall by negating the pull of the river.
USER(S): Katara and Aang are the only known to have done this, though there is nothing to limit other waterbenders from doing so.
-
#6 NAME: Nonvisible Water Push and Pull
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: Simply what it says. Push and Pulling water, but on a source that isn't visible, such as trapped underground water. Katara and Aang use this in Jet (S1E10) of the series to loose water trapped beneath gysers.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, probably most waterbenders.
-
#7 NAME: Water Jet (Get it?)
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender forcefully streams water outward, knocking back the target and allowing time for other moves to be used.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, probably all other waterbenders.
-
#8 NAME: Freezing Breath
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The user breathes out a cold breath, freezing water it touches. This is usually used to root a foe in place, though its uses are many. Katara uses it to freeze Jet in S1E10, and free Sokka in S2E4. It should be noted that it doesn't seem a breath is needed for a bender to freeze water at all, as most seem to be able to do this at will, including Katara.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, many other waterbenders.
-
#9 NAME: Water Umbrella
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The user simply suspends rainwater above the user and diverts it around him or her, avoiding getting wet. To my knowledge, this is only seen in The Fortune Teller, S1E14 of the series, used by Katara.
USER(S): Katara is the only shown waterbender to do this specific move.
-
#10 NAME: Cloud Bending
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender bends clouds (i.e. Water vapor). So far the only use for this was shown in The Fortune Teller, S1E14 when Katara and Aang bend clouds around.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, and probably most other waterbenders.
-
#11 NAME: Healing Technique
Credit: Avatarspirit.net
DESCRIPTION: A gift found in certain waterbenders. This has been shown in the series to remove burns and scratches. It should be noted that Katara used this technique without knowledge of its existence or any kind of training, reinforcing the notion that it must be a trait in waterbenders. This, however, conflicts with the females at the Northern Tribe, where Paku states that women 'learn' to use their waterbending for healing, making it sound like all can do it.
USER(S): Katara, seemingly any female waterbender.
-
#12 NAME: Ice Spikes
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender shoots out a stream of water that is then frozen into sharp deadly cutting spikes. It should be noted that Katara initially uses this move at the Northern Air Temple by using the freezing breath to form then, yet later in the series we see this isn't needed to freeze water with bending.
USER(S): Katara, Master Paku, most intermediate waterbenders.
-
#13 NAME: Water Wall
DESCRIPTION: The bender swirls a massive amount of water around him or her, enclosing their opponent. Can be used to pull someone in, then push them out again. Aang uses this move in the Avatar State in S1E2 on Zuko's ship to blast them overboard.
USER(S): Aang, Master Paku. Katara could probably do it, but hasn't been shown to yet to my knowledge.
-
#14 NAME: Water Cyclone
DESCRIPTION: The bender swirls a massive amount of water around at high speed, resulting in a water version of a tornado.
USER(S): Aang is the only known bender shown to manipulate it in this manner, in the Avatar State in S1E2. Master Paku and Katara are more than likely capable of this move.
-
#15 NAME: Ice Wall
DESCRIPTION: Much like the water wall, but frozen. Used mainly to block attacks or divert the foe's movement.
USER(S): Master Paku, Aang, Katara have all been shown using a version of this technique.
-
#16 NAME: Ice Rooting (Self)
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender freezes water around their feet and ankles, rooting them to the ground to avoid being knocked down or away by incoming attacks. It should be noted that Sandbenders from S2E10-11 use an earth-based version of this technique.
USER(S): Katara is the only one shown using it, but Aang and Master Paku and other waterbenders are more than likely capable.
-
#17 NAME: Water Grip
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender grasps an enemy with an uppercut-like water bolt, heaving the victim wherever the user wishes. Other than the Ocean Spirit, this is the only shown waterbending move that actually picks up a person into the air.
USER(S): Master Paku is the only person shown who has used this technique, but Katara and Aang can more than likely use it.
-
#18 NAME: Ice Disks
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender creates a small circular column of ice, then shaves off thin layers off the top towards their target, shooting razor sharp cutting disks of ice at it.
USER(S): Katara is the only one shown using this technique, though Master Paku and Aang can probably do it as well.
-
#19 NAME: Vaoprize
DESCRIPTION: This is simply transferring a frozen object or objects frozen form into snow or water vapor. Used here it is a defensive technique, vaoprizing the falling objects into harmless snow.
USER(S): Master Paku, Katara. Aang can probably do it, but hasn't been shown using it.
-
#20 NAME: Snowplow (Could use help for a name here)
DESCRIPTION: The bender rolls snow and other frozen water together, upheaving a snowlike steamroller towards a target.
USER(S): Katara is the only one shown utilizing this unique move, and only in one episode.
-
#21 NAME: Ice Shard Rain
DESCRPTION: After bending water into the air, the waterbender spins and freezes it into deadly shards and spikes, sending sharp projectiles down on the victim. This move is only shown being used by Master Paku, and he displayed complete control of each individual shard. He used it on Katara and instead of impaling her several times with ice, he was able to simply trap her and immobilize her arms for bending.
USER(S): Master Paku is the only waterbender shown using this technique.
-
#22 NAME: Snowball
DESCRIPTION: Simple bending move involving freezing water into a block or ball to be shot towards a target.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, Master Paku and most other waterbenders are probably capable of this move, even if not shown to on screen.
-
#23 NAME: Freezing Peak
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender freezes a massive amount of water around the victim, forming a type of small mountain trapping the victim's body, rendering him or her helpless. Katara uses this sparring with a student and on Zuko while protecting Aang.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, Master Paku and intermediate waterbenders can probably use this move.
-
#24 NAME: Snowman
DESCRIPTION: The bender encases himself with snow, becoming the visage of a snowman. Although used jokingly by Aang, this technique could be used as either a decoy, or by freezing the snow to form ice armor. Aang and Toph use a very similar earthbending based move with rocks and crystals.
USER(S): Aang is the only one shown to do anything like this with water.
-
#25 NAME: Mass Freezing Peak
DESCRIPTION: Identical to the Freezing Peak, but on a much larger scale. This move is shown a couple times in the series by a large number of waterbenders (20+) to uproot and immobilize Fire Nation Navy Vessels, rendering them harmless.
USER(S): It seems this is a standard fighting technique against Fire Nation vessels, so most waterbenders probably know how to use this move with others.
-
#26 NAME: Ice Rooting (Other)
DESCRIPTION: Exactly like Ice Rooting (Self) except used to root a victim in place, to enable time to escape or utilize a more powerful technique.
USER(S): Katara uses this on both Jet and Zuko. Aang, Paku and other waterbenders are probably capable.
-
#27 NAME: Ice Prison
DESCRIPTION: The bender swirls water around the victim from multiple directions in a sphere-like pattern, then freezes the water, encasing the victim in a prison of ice to completely immobilize the target's movement.
USER(S): Katara is the only one shown using this, and only in one episode (S1E19-20) on Zuko.
-
#28 NAME: Ice Spire
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender freezes water underneath the victim in the shape of a column, immobilizing them in the air. From this point, the user bends the ice back down at great speed, assisted by gravity, slamming the helpless victim into the ground, usually knocking them unconscious.
USER(S): Katara is the only one shown to use this technique, and only in one episode (S1E19-20) on Zuko.
-
SEASON 2
-
#29 NAME: The Octopus Form
DESCRIPTION: The waterbender forms the likeness of tentacles around him/her, protecting the user from incoming attacks from multiple angles or targets. Katara teaches Aang this form and thus both know how to use it. It looks to be a mainly defensive move, but can switch to offensive when needed.
USER(S): Katara, Aang are shown using it, and it was probably taught from Master Paku.
-
#30 NAME: Ice Darts
DESCRIPTION: The bender forms small needle-like projectiles out of the water, launching them toward an opponent. A fairly basic move.
USER(S): Katara, Aang, Paku, Most other waterbenders.

Many more coming soon, just doing the first 10 I have myself in order of appearence before I sleep, but do feel free to submit good (HQ) pictures, even ones you feel would better illustrate the moves I've just covered. Please remember, do not put them in IMG tags, just give me a hotlink and I'll add it to the guide when I get time. =)
Thanks to all who contribute/wish to while I'm away!
