1. The original line of Avatars was broken but because Aang was revived he is now the beginning Avatar in a new line. (Sounds familiar, something similar to this happened in Buffy the Vampire Slayer when Buffy was killed then revived, it broke the line of slayers)
2. Aang is no longer the Avatar, the Avatar ceases to exist so now Aang is merely an airbender, since you need all 4 elements to defeat the fire lord perhaps it won't just be Aang facing off against him, with the addition of a master firebender to the gang (perhaps Iroh, or maybe even Zuko if he switches sides) they would have a master for each of the 4 elements with Toph being the best earthbender there is, Aang as the best airbender, Katara as the best waterbender, and then the fire bender. Then to add to all of that they would have Sokka's ability to strategize and invent things.
These theories are just my random speculations, both are probably dead wrong, but until the next season starts this is all us Avatar fans can do.
To add to my second theory, if it is Iroh who joins the gang (if they can find a way to free him) perhaps after they beat the fire lord he will finally claim the title he was wrongfully denied and be a peaceful ruler and restore harmony amongst the 4 nations. (the same theory could apply to Zuko if he turns good)
