Everyone is always saying that it's a ponytail. Well it isn't. What Zuko used to have was called a "Topknot". They are very similar in most respects, but with some key differences:

1.) A ponytail starts at the base of the neck. A topknot starts at the scalp.

2.) With a ponytail, the rest of the hair on th head remains. With a topknot, all the hair (except for the topknot itself) is shaved off.

3.) In "ATLA", a ponytail is just a hair style. A topknot is a denotion of the royal family of the Fire Nations (in males, at least).

Actually a ponytail is a hairstyle with hair pulled back and if u look at the flashbacks the hair is not shaved off. I'm sure it's still a symble of devotion but don't make a big deal about it.

I can't help it. I'm an near-psychosis level stickler for propriety.

Lots of asian cultures often donote status with hair. I know that samurai, royal officials, priests, army memebers, and various other high ranking groups often had special hair styles they considered sacred. That's why it was such a big deal when he cut it off. It was a symbol of his honor. And i dont think they had to shave the head as iroh's and ozai's aren't shaved.
