I have an interesting theory related to the Library in episode 2-10, and the circumstances where it was used by people in the past.

One thing that has made me wonder after watching that??episode??is why the Owl Spirit (I have no idea how to spell his name) chose when he did to sink the library and try to kill the people in it. Considering the ways it had been used in the past, by people such as Zhao, considering that Fire Benders had burned a huge section of it, why did he choose then to sink it? Why had he not done so sooner? Was it just like the old saying of "the straw that broke the camel's back"? Or was it something more? Was there something in particular about what Aang and his companions wanted to do that made the Owl Spirit unhappy?

Something about the way he asked "You think you are the first to think your war is just?" gave me an idea, and it has spawned into an interesting theory. I think that the Fire Nation used the library to find out about the Comet and how it could be used. They used it to get the tools they needed to launch??a devastating strike against the other nations.??And... I think they had a very good reason for thinking their war was just.

I think that someone else, sometime beforehand, had also used information from the library. This someone or something used it??to find out about the Solar Eclipse. And then??he/it/they did something horrible to the Fire Nation. That was the so called "darkest day".

So then, the Fire Nation retaliates against the world. They too??use information from the library to do so. They also destroy any information about themselves... not out of any malice, but in a desire to protect themselves from any further attacks.

And then, much in the future, Aang and his companions learn about an upcoming Solar Eclipse, and want to use it to attack the Fire Nation. Completely and utterly unaware that someone earlier used to same information to start the chain of events that lead to the war they are trying to end.

Of course, the Owl Spirit, who did know this, would have found the whole thing tragically ironic. It must have seemed like some horrible cycle that was just going to go on and on. Hence, he finally decided to bury the library.

Wow, you make some very excellent points. I agree with you that maybe the fire nation used the library to find out how to use the comet to their advantage, but I disagree that by the gAang using the solar ecilpse it starts another cycle in which the fire nation will create another war. But excellent theories, very well thought out!

??Yeah, interesting theory and definitely possible...but do u think the Fire Nation would go to such an extent of wiping out the Air Nomads(who, mind u,are very peaceful people)??just to 'protect' themselves?

Maybe it was part of the Air Nomads who were responsible. Sure, the Air Nomads we saw seemed peaceful... but then again, we've only seen little bits of them in Aang's flashbacks. And we did see that some of them at least were not always fair or wise. (Them forgetting that though Aang is indeed the Avatar, he was also a 12 year old kid, and more than a simple tool for maintaining balance.)

Or perhaps the Air Nomads weren't actually responsible, but whoever was made it look that way.

We've only seen Air Monks. We know that there are different factions of Earthbenders, I doubt it's impossible that there were Air Warmongers. It's a good theory, every meglomaniac feels justified. But for me, I prefer the "Manifest Destiny" rule of motive.

Hard to say. The Owl didn't want them leaving and "abusing" the knowledge they gained, but that guy was quite happy to spend the rest of his life there, so the Owl might not care. Of course, convincing the Owl of that might have been some trouble, and there's also the issues of air and food/water, so that guy may not have had the happiest fate. We'll probably never know though, but it's always possible they could revisit the Library sometime in the future.

Mabe the owl spirit was the first thing that learned how to do a solar eclipse, since he is an owl. Owl's are nocternal. And now he ever regrets that he ever did that, since the Fire Nation wants revenge.

um, solar eclispes are natural occurances, even in the Avatar world. you can't learn how to do them. you can learn about them, but not do them. the Fire Nation destroyed the information gathered about them because it would show their weaknesses to their enemies.

I'd still love to see the Avatar bend Sozin's Comet into the Fire Nation capitol.

This is really random, and I feel so dumb, but, when was the lunar eclipse for the waterbenders? Was it during the siege of the north? I don't remember. All I know is that Zhao stole the white fishy swimming around in circles in the special spirit pond with Aang going into the Spirit world, and it was warm, and there were trees and grass. That is what turned the moon and sky red.

That was a full moon, not a lunar eclipse. We haven't seen either eclipse yet.

Yeah, I think it was during "The Seige of the North" but that one wasn't naturally occuring, so I'm not sure if that counts

    Oh.

What about returning to Wan She Tong's library? I think it would be great. I always think they should revisit some of the spirits... Habaii, Koh, Koh especially...

Ok reading your responses gave me an idea. Since Wan Shi Tong is in fact a spirit, then wouldn't there be another way to enter the library through the Spirit World? According to Avatar Spirit.net, Wan Shi Tong brought the library from the Spirit World to the mortal world, perhaps he left an entrance in his library that still connects him to the Spirit World.

Hmm, interesting idea. The Gaang might need something that only they could find in the library, so Aang thinks its worth a shot and goes back in there. Maybe advice from Koh...

But I just thought of another thing. Why would they want to go back there at all, even if they needed something from there?

Why would they go back to the island in Jurassic Park 3? Boredom!

But no, you're right. Backtracking for something minor in a series is a lame idea. Maybe if it was some kind of game, the ability to return would always be nice, but they've got thier key item, they advanced the plot, it's just time for the boss fight and to put in Disk 3.
