I am willing to believe that waterbenders learned by observing how tides are affected by the moon. I am willing to believe that earthbenders learned by observing living animals that are alive and healthy. However, I am not willing to believe that airbenders learned by observing flying animals. I believe airbenders learned by observing the effect air has, from the lightest breeze to the strongest (-observable) vortex, on what it surrounds. And I believe firebenders learned by observing how fire spreads in forest fires, and how heat radiates (as if from lava flows or from sick or dying animals). If I could illustrate a movie to demonstrate, I would, since it's difficult for me to express these thoughts with mere words.

You see, the whole idea of people learning things from nature sorta relates to early Asian arts, which is what this show is based on. And I would have to agree with the above, I don't think the Airbenders learned how to bend from the Sky Bisons...

Excellent description M, I've noticed you have quite a few of them , but I'm afraid that they're incorrect. The creators have said several times that the Airbenders learned their discipline from the Sky Bisons. Most recently in an Q and A video that can be seen on turbonick. Also if you've noticed, so far almost every bending art was originated by observing someone else do it. The water tribes watched the Moon Spirit push and pull the tides, the two lovers from the badgermoles making tunnels in their cave, and the Airbenders from the flying??bisons. My guess (and a bunch of other people) is that the firebenders learned it from either the dragon (though Chinese dragons don't breath fire, they breath "sheng chi" and are connected to water, still Roku's dragon had the wings of a fire-breathing European dragon so its all good) or some kind of Great Sun spirit or simply a fire spirit (ooh like??that Calcifer guy in Howl's Moving??Castle ). It??would be pretty difficult to learn it all by yourself, still your idea was quite feasible.??

Still, THE CREATORS' WORD IS LAW!!! ALL HAIL THE CREATORS!!!!

...Yeah. Really missin that Avatar picture thread right about now.

P.S.-all this kindof belongs in the Ask a Question, Get an Answer thread and it has been asked several times before. Just had 2 point it out.

I know it's their universe, but those methods don't make much sense to me. I could see, and have seen (by thought exercises if not directly/empirically), how natural phenomena could be mimicked artificially.

Exactly what I'm saying. I mean the idea of flying cows and hybrid pigs doesn't make much sense to me either. ??And yes it is possible to mimick natural phenomena but its also very difficult. Look how long it took us to discover electricity, just the day b4 we that it was some??thunder god or somethin.??Anyway the point i'm making is that??given what has been shown on the show, it makes??more sense (in show anyway) that they learned it from observing animals rather than through such a??scientific and analytical method.??Don't forget how primitive the people in the show still are.

Based on the fact that Avitar Roku had a dragon as an animal guide meant that when he was alive, so was the dragon. It seems like the dragon is a rare but real animal in the Avitar universe which probably lives in the oceans nearby the fire nation. It would make sense that they learned firebending from dragons, because fire bending is based on the creation of fire from breathe, just like how dragons breathe fire. I would say that is the most likely option.

It's easier for me to think of the animals in AtLA not as "hybrids", but as unique species not found on Earth-as-dad-knows-it.

Actually, that was just a turn of phrase. After all, a hybrid is usually a polymerization of two seperate entities and there have been animals on the show with a 3 to 4-way crossbreed. C there's another one. ??

Water benders learned from the moonspirit and lose their powers during a lunar eclipse.

Given the fact that firebenders lose their power during a solar eclipse, the most logical conclusion is that they learned from the sun spirit.

By, the by, i totally guessed the whole flying bison thing. At least after the badgermole episode. I think its interesting the way they set up the opposite bendings with similar characteristics. (fire and water learned from extra-terrestial bodies, air and earth learned from animals)

Finally, M, the benders did learn how to bend from the animals or by watching the tide, but they're harnessing the elements in a way that man-kind as we know it could nver hope to achieve without the aid of advanced technology.

I realize my thoughts are incompatible with the writers' vision. I'm only paraphrasing that "How to Build a Superhero" journal I'm keeping that I mentioned in another thread.

Basically everything I said. But yeah I noticed that 2. Earth and Air-animals, water and fire- spirit astronomical spirits. Still, I wouldn't count out that dragon possibility. Fire requires energy and the sun may simply be a source (solar energy der) for firebenders. Also I think we've known about that bison thing for awhile. I believe the information was on the back of Appa's??card??that was apart of those ecollectable thinges??that came out on??Nick.com when the show first started. They seriously??need to make??some new ones.??
