    Aang did defeat the firelord, but Roku said to defeat him Before the comet arrived. He defeated him after.


    Is it safe to assume he suceeded, but yet failed in a sense?

    The point was to defeat the firelord before he could do any real damage w/ the comet. The comet itself wasn't gonna hurt anybody. So yes, he did succeed.

    Agreed, it was viewed that it would've been easier for Aang to defeat a normal powered fire lord instead of a super powered one.

    I agree with both of you. It would have been easier to defeat the Fire Lord before the comet came, and we saw how powerful he was with the comet there. So he defeated the fire lord while still preserving his soul. That's as big a success as I can fathom

    I agree too, the goal was to defeat the fire lord before he could use the comet to carry out his plan, since with it he was so much more powerful
