Is it just me, or is Aang more of the avatar he's supposed to be, then the wise-cracking, giddy, 12-year old that Sokka and Katara found in the iceberg??2 seasons ago? If you think about it, he hasn't really acted like he was acting back then...??for a long time now. I think??losing Appa??changed his demeanor a lot. And he seemed really intent on opening his chakra gates until he came to the last one. Even then he was focused on one thing only, saving Katara. He's defenitely not??who he used to be.??

But that's not the kind of maturity I'm addressing. I'm talking about when he opened the last chakra gate and went into the Avatar State, he "let go" of Katara and was able to open the gate. Does that mean he has permanently let go??of Katara, or does he still have feelings for her??????

    Fire away.

I'm sure he still has feelings for her. He had to give up his earthly connection to save her, but love was an important chakra too. We can't forget that.??

My speculation: It's OK for Aang to feel love, but not to become attached to whom (or what) he loves. But then, is it really love? Maybe it is. In the Chris Reeve Superman movie series, he is allowed to love the people of earth, but not to single anyone out. But what does that make Kal-El (or Aang)? A herobot?

I believe he did let her go, but it would have been easier to tell if he had pushed Katara back during the ending while they hugged.

Yeah, Aang became more mature because he now realizes he's the last hope for the planet and is the Avatar (It was like the 3rd chakra or something). He also needs a way to bypass the last chakra. Maybe after he defeats ****in' Ozai, he can go to relationships.

He's the avatar, he is supposed to love and value everything, from the fire nation to some random hybrid creature.

Will he still love Katara, of course. But he will also love Sokka, Toph, Appa, Momo, ect. Will he still have feelings for Katara, sure. The difference is he can not let those feelings dictate his actions or have influence over his mission. his world can not focus around her, it needs to focus on his duty to the entire world

well you know the avatar loving one person isn't really unheard of. remember the face stealing monster? he and the avatar fought because he took the face of someone the avatar loved. granted that avatar didn't look like an air nomad, but since the avatar embodies all the elements there is just as much firebender passion as there is airbender transcendence.
i personally see the last chakra gate as a matter of coveting worldly desires over cosmic macinations. ie would he screw the world if it meant having katara. there is a notable difference between loving something and coveting something, and given aang's recent descent into the gravity of the situation, i don't think he would forsake his place as avatar just for katara.

there also is the lingering fact that if aang doesn't at some point sire some little airbenders, the avatar chain is not going to?? have a lot of?? turnaround in four generations.

Would it be possible for Aang to have feelings for Katara, and then whenever he wanted to go into The Avatar State, he would let go of earthly attachments momentarily? Then as soon as he became Aang again, would he be able to continue his affection for Katara?

I don't think so. That's a pretty cheap way to go about it. I don't think the creators would go the easy way, and make it so that he can go in the avatar state and love Katara.
