The base story as used for plays by Euripides Aeschylos Sophocles etc. isn't that Oedipus tries to avoid his so told destiny. Oedipus never knew about the oracles speech.
Don't read this if you don't want to:
The king and queen of Thebes were expecting a child and to celebrate they went to see the oracle. In vague words however the oracle brought bad news that the coming son was going to kill his own father and marry his mother. The King decided therefore to part the baby from his wife once born and bring it to the high mountains. To be sure the child would stay and probably die of starvation there without possible power to escape (though it was a baby) he decided to perforate the left heel. The baby got left there, however....the wolves found it and holy moly instead of eating they raised it, until one day when the child was about 3 farmers found it. The child was, not knowing of his real identity, born and raised there. He was called Oedipus because he was impaired on his left feet by the perforated heel (yes: it's a scar brought to him by his own father! ).
However, when Oedipus grows old enough he decides to travel and discover the world. After some adventures like a sphinx riddle and a guy who likes to stretch people and chop of feet in beds he has an encounter with his father, not knowing it is his father. The father spits at 'the simple farmer' and as tradition of that day because of mutual disrespect they start a fight. Oedipus wins the fight and daddad dies. Then Oedipus gets to Thebe, there are some problems...forgot what exactly. The one to complete a certain task gets to marry the queen of Thebes, who, dun dun dun duuun, just got to be a widow. Yes, and Oedipus marries her, not knowing it is his mother. It's not until he and his mother got a few children (and yes, a crazy incest bunch; twins who kill each other and a depressed bunch of ladies) and raised them, when one day his mother/wife tells him the story of her 'lost child' and somehow there happens something that makes Oedipus and his motherwife find out the truth. Oedipus is flabbergasted and asks his guards to cut out his tongue and eyeballs and let him be banished. Mother kills herself out of disgrace.
Very long story, I know. However, the mainpoint is Oedipus doing the act never knew he was doing it (right?). I believe there isn't even a version where he knows what he's doing. Only the audience know the fullness of the story while watching, that's the fun.
Ok! Back on topic lmao.
Edit: The Sphinx was the task and the mother was called Iocaste. I should have a tragedyfix.
Edit: So in Sophocles he already knew. In some mythologylessons he never knew. the oracle speech Ok, this post is irrelevant. Back on subject.
