Heres my opinon on this- Aang didnt learn to master all four elements, he just learned to bend the four elements. Have you seen Aang do any fantastic, crazy bending with air, water or earth, excluding the Avatar State? There are probably a few instances where he does, but most of the times I only see Aang doing small air whips or throw a rock, a water whip etc... If he were to have as much time as Roku did, Im sure Aang would be doing something more fantastic. In the Avatar and The Fire Lord, Roku was able to create a big water wave/force at his master, he was able to go underground with earth bending and Im not sure if Aang could do those, Ive never seen him use any of these techniques, and to me, that look quite more advanced. Jeong Jeong was able to create a wall of fire, will Aang be able to do that, considering he only has a few weeks of fire training(although I can be wrong on this, we havent seen Aang fully fire bend yet). So in my opinon, the past avatars are stronger than Aang, only because they had more time to fully master each element, while Aang didnt have the time, but learned some of the stuff from each element. Therefore, he needs the Avatar State to defeat the FireLord.

Well actually his tattooed arrows indicate that he has mastered airbending.

Right now pre-finale i'd say not as skilled, but not less powerful after all he does have the full potential of the avatar. Once he's had time to fully master the elements and all their sub-disciplines like healing, lightning and metal bending i think he'll probably be more skilled simply because of the fact he has had to fight a war, and adapt what he's learnt to full fledged combat rather than just a simple skirmish or duel.

I agree with what someone said before as well, the avatar state will be more powerful but not regular Aang as he's just another avatar and has the same potential that all those who have come before him.

Not to mention, if he learnt lightning & metal bending that might be a 1st for Avatars.

i dont think lightning would be a first, seeing as how it was discovered some time before the storyline, but metal bending could be a first considering that we've heard and seen of no bender, other than toph, who can bend metal. although bumi maybe able too considering he's had nearly a 112 years (more or less) to master his earthbending skills

When all the other Avatars were still in school and thinking they were normal kids, Aang has already got down 3 elements. Aang will be the strongest Avatar ever when he becomes fully realized. By the time he's 20, he'll have 8 years of experience where the others only had 4. And he'd still be entering his prime.

So yeah, he's already surpassed the others we know about just based on rate of progressions

well my point is that iroh didnt say that lightning was restricted to any special person or persons, the only thing is that you must not be in mental turmoil like zuko was

As of the finale I would say Aang is ocnsiderably weaker than the other Avatars. He is no where near mastering Fire or Earth and I wouldn't even call him a waterbending master yet...

Very true, but lightning could be a fairly new to firebenders, since no-one older than Iroh has been show to do it.

    spoilers!!!

Aang had the strength to look a giant lion turtle in the eye and learn how to defeat the firelord without killing him. He learned to do something invented before avatars were around. He had the strenght to ignore his past lives and carry through with what he knew was right. He even came out of the avatar state before he killed Ozai. He sucked the bending right out of him!!!!I think that's saying something.

But only because he hasn't had enough time to master all the elements like all the other Avatars.

I'm hoping that in The Old Masters, Aang will become a hell of a lot more powerful.

dont foget that aang has the power of what the turtle lion told him, i think he was the only avatar to know that move???

    Slightly more powerful.

Remember, with each revival and cycle of the Avatar, the knowledge and prowess joins the others in the Spirit World, meaning each one is more powerful than the last.

I say quite a bit more powerful ,, although we don't know to much about past avatars we do know ... When Firelord Sozin started the war , Roku couldn't stop him. Aang beat Ozai in his prime when the comet was back. That has to stand for something..

Kyoshi dealt in squabbles , the water avatar let his girls face get stolen .. uh not cool .. not if Im the Avatar

AAng did all this at age 12 w/just months of training not years. Its not a fact .. but I say yes, oh he** yes

-just another thought brought 2 you by c-griff-holy- and company

Each Avatar is more powerful then the last I think. They have more wisdom to add to their next incarnation. They can draw wisdom from another person every time.

Don't forget Aang was an air bending progeny. He was possibly the youngest child to ever be considered a 'master' of his art when he was awarded his tattoos. He even invented his his own air bending technique, the air scooter which was before he became a master, that as far as the nomads knew no other had ever discovered. He didn't even know he was the Avatar at the time.
