Aside from the outgoing part of air, it suits me.

I don't think it has anything to do with zodiac signs. Personally I don't believe in this stuff, not to be offensive or anything.

If you look at it in a scientific perspective what elements the offsprings bend depends on their parents and their genetics.

The answer to only some people bending, while not others is to do with genetic as well, where I believe that the bending gene must be dominant while the non bendable gene recessive, to have so many benders, almost like how the black gene is dominant and white gene is recessive, not being racist, that's the truth.

Anyway like I was saying if a pair of 2 non bendable genes formed in the offsprin then the offspring will not be able to bend, whil if there is one bendable and one non bendable or two bendable genes, then he/she should be able to bend.
What they bend depends on what type of bendable gene the offspring was give by the parents.

If you ask me it is simple genetics that explains this confusion, nothing to do with zodiac signs.

umm guys.. lucky for you ikow genetics..(hehhe.. not to insult you guys..) okay here it is:
there are chromosomes in a human cell which is aout 23 pairs of chromosomes(46 individual chromosomes(2n= diploid)).
each parent gives a haploid(n) gamete(aka sperm and egg) now each pair of homologous chromosomes have certain genes that affect the outcome of a child.
lets use: R = dominant for fire bending (for example)
r = recessice trait for example water
(for example on the nth homologous pair)
the parents are pure breed or homozygous as one is a pure water bender and one is a pure fire bender
    RR x rr
    the outcomes are:
four Rr the phenotypes, which is heterozygous firebender ,of these oppsrings is an outcome of all are firebender capable but we do not know who among these will be a firebender and these also are carriers of the waterbending trait thet can be past down to the next generation...
    to be continued...

now for two parent that are heterozygous (Rr)

    Rr x Rr
the out come is (genotype) RR , Rr , Rr , and rr
    thus,
there is a ure breed fire bender
    two heterozygous fire benders and
    a pure breed water bender
    note:
not all offsprings(as we know in Avatar) will have the ability to BEND! now if you have questions I wil gladly entertain them.
OWW by the WAY AVATAR ROCKS!!

oww yeah i for got in further implications of genetics an exponent can be placed in each representation of a characteristic meaning it is somewhat the specific gene that makes a person able to bend(in the avatar world that is)

Genetics could be the answer, but remember the twins in The Fortuneteller? They were identical yet only one of the could Earthbend, which means there couldn't possibly be a bending gene.

I think its the spirit within one's self. Katara has the spirit, while Sokka obviously does not. Like the Lion Turtle said, Katara can bend the energy inside herself, but Sokka cannot... Right?

Disclaimer: Too lazy to read all the posts

But I'm sure it doesn't have anything to do with when you're born. It has something to do with ancestors and pure luck.

I have a theory on what element you can bend is not based on when you were born or the genetics of what element your relatives can bend.

Basically you are born a bender or a nonbender and that is it. So a baby can potentially bend any element later in life but as soon as a child learns to bend one element he or she will lose the ability to learn any of the other 3 elements. Think about it we have never seen a duel bender nor did any of the types of bending originate anywhere near the same parts of the world. If you grew up around waterbenders for instance chances are you are going to learn how to waterbend. And I think having the ability to bend is a combination of genes and spirituality.

Katara taught herself how to bend. I'm sure she discovered she could bend by accidently bending to protect herself.

If this is how bending is determined, which it isn't, I'd be Earth! Taurus of the World: UNITE!

But I'm pretty sure bending has to do with ancestry (and possibly ethicity). I was going to divide up the elements as they appear in the show based on ethnicity, but I don't know where whites would fall, and I don't know enough about Asian culture to be able to divide it up properly (because we all know Asians fall in three of the four elements, and we all know that there is a difference between Chinese and Japanese). And there are lots of other complications as well. Like for Latinos. The Latinos who are mostly or wholly of Spanish descent (light-skinned Latinos) would probably still insist on being part of the Fire Nation because of the Sun Warriors (I know a couple of people who would do this, so don't deny it!), despite that that we have yet to see anyone white on the show (or ever will). Then there are also black Latinos... wait, they would still be in the Fire Nation, never mind that But then there is also if the Latino is from South America or the Caribbean: the Sun Warriors are based on the Aztecs and Mayas, so it only covers North and Central America. There is also the issue of Native Americans who aren't Inuit or Aztec or Maya. And not even he Arabs have it easy anymore thanks to WWII...

    *sigh* So many complications....

I'm Earth. I used to like fire, but then I watched Avatar JK. I actually did like fire before, but after a hwhile I came to terms with the element earth and realized that I enjoy it much more. I think it might be brainwashing.
