I hope this hasn't been asked already; I'm fairly new here.?? But how does a bender differentiate between bending and regular martial arts??? For example, could Katara do tai chi without her attacks being backed up by water??? Do benders voluntarily release their element when bending or does it happen involuntarily?

P.S. -?? You guys won't believe this.?? I accidentally posted this thread in the Naruto forums since I was switching back and forth between Avatar and Naruto.?? The guys there were confused, to say the least.

well, each bending art is based on a martial art form in real life (you can find out on this turbonick thing on Nick.com). anyway, i'm pretty sure since they bend in a marital art form, they could do it without the bending. i'm also pretty sure that they can choose when and when not to bend (like with Zuko when he could only use his swords while fighting) but i'm not entirely sure, so don't take my word for it.

congrats on posting in the right forum this time

    - benders aren't forced to use their element everytime they throw a punch. But in the case of Katara, it would be alot more effective.

i think the action of benders is voluntarily release

and to the other question i dont think they differentiate between the two but adapt it to the fight

Bending can be pretty much confirmed as being a vouluntary action through??the martial arts...Zuko has??shown that...he was??fighting with regular swords until he was pushed then he brought out??the flaming swords...??and I'm pretty sure that without bending Katara can't fight worth a damn....

btw I love that title, my man(or woman) The Human Torch is a childhood favorite (though I liked the Thing better)

Well, I just thought of this because I don't think I've ever seen a normal hand-to-hand battle in Avatar.

Okay, let me rephrase that. I've never seen any benders engage in normal hand-to-hand combat.

your right I can't think of any benders in a normal hand to hand combat (That would be cool to see I think)

Well, wouldn't it be a bit stupid of them to engage in regular combat when their lives are at stake? The only time I can remember this happening was in "Zuko Alone", when Zuko took down the regular Earth Kingdom ruffians without using his firebending.
