Title says it all............ Speculate away.

note: I changed the title. it was first Bending beginning speculation, and I changed it to just fire since we all supposedly know where the others came from

We can't speculate. Aside from Firebending, we already know how bending came to be.
The would be Waterbenders saw how the moon pushed and pulled the tides and learned how to Waterbend.
Two lovers saw the Earthbending badger-moles, studied them, and learned how to Earthbend themselves.
The would be Airbenders studied the Airbending flying bisons and learned to Airbend themselves, hence why they tattoo Airbending masters with arrows, in honor of the flying bison.

Even though the bison thing makes sense, we won't know for sure until it is stated in the show.

Phoenix is right, they said that they learned airbending by watching the flying Bison, as for fire bending, that is the only one we can theorize, and more than likely they learned it from a dragon, as Roku rode on one in the spirit world and when he was alive.

...yep...b4 bending happened..ppl studied how the sun breathed huh?...makes alllooottt of sense

its most likely from the dragon

as fire benders control their breathing, dragons breath fire

Maybe the dragons got their power from the sun? That would explain the solar eclipse thing.

I like the idea that they learned it from the sun. It fits in Avatar style, air and earth are opposites and water and fire are opposites.

Earth and Airbenders??both learned??bending from different animals (moles and bison) so??they are connected that way.

Waterbenders learned to bend by??watching the moon. So it makes sense that Firebenders did the same by??watching the sun.

They had to learn it from the sun and be powered by it otherwise the solar eclipse wouldn't matter...Moon is to??Waterbending as??Sun is to??Firebending

my question is... where is it being generated from though?

Earthbenders cannot bend unless there is earth (i.e. Imprisoned episode)

Waterbenders cannot bend unless there is water (noted by Katara and her pouch)

Airbenders, I assume, just manipulate the air around them.

Fire is a??fuel in a state of combustion... to sustain it you need oxygen and a fuel.?? How does the firebender manipulate the fire when there is no fuel to sustain it??? And if they are manipulating the gases in the air to combust, where is the spark being generated from to ignite it???

I know this seems way to technical and I can simply answer this question with a simple "IT IS WHAT IT IS" because after all its only a cartoon, but hey, they were so savvy with the other 3 bending arts I just wanna kinda grasp where the fire came from.

Here's the official way Firebending is done as told by Iroh:

"Power in Firebending comes from the breathe not the muscles. The breathe becomes energy in the body. The energy extends past your limbs and becomes fire..."

And I'm thinking you can easily replace breathe??with oxygen??and there you go.

now I remember that... but then I guess they never give us an explanation as to what fuels the fire except possibly that the body itself is the fuel.?? That could be a determination in understanding how in the Angi Kai, there are not burned until they are beaten (i.e. fight fire with fire).??

Substitute breath for breathe, and You Got It.

Strike a wooden match. Is the limb the match? Would the energy of the body be analogous to the striking surface?

^If anything, Zuko showed how it was done when he traveled into the Northern Water Tribe. The heat that firebenders use comes from their own body heat. It's why they don't need an outside source (or even need the temperature to be warm) in order to firebend.
