How is it possible that the Fire Nation was winning in the war against both the Water Tribes (until the battle at the north pole) and the Earth Kingdom?
From what we know of the Northern Water Tribe, it should have easily defeated the Fire Navy - how much more in their element could the waterbenders have been for the past 100 years -
1)arctic weather (harder to firebend, presumably)
2)unending supply of water
As for the Earth Kingdom...
Shouldn't the armies of the Earth Kingdom be able to do hit and run attacks via subterranian earthbending? We've seen several skilled earthbenders being able to dig tunnels from one place to another, why can't the earthbenders do the same?
Adding to that, why can't the earthbenders simply sink their opponents into the earth? After that, they could just go read a book, or something. It seems like doing the move that General Fong did on Katara would be a lot easier than hurling tons (literally) of rocks long distances.
If they can do such things, as we know they can, why haven't they done so on every occasion? It doesn't seem like anyone other than an airbender can counter such attacks, unless of course, the armies of the fire nation constantly build metal roads wherever they go, and never step on solid ground.
All thoughts welcome.
