You know what I'm trying to say.

No cult of thought out, well-spoken posters on a small forum like this is going to stem a tide of abbreviations, illiteracy, '1337speak' and jerks. And with respect, it's rather nerdy, semi-elitist, and misplaced on a forum devoted to a show mainly targeted at children, who are probably most prone to these things.

I can understand the will for proper posting, grammar, not having troll posts and reposted threads. But a whole thread dedicated to it with 'disciples' and 'voters' and everything?

It's just kind of creeping me out is all.

I don't care about that(unless it is done intentionally) the disciples is about stopping people who flame, who don't take the time to look at the least the last 50 threads in order not to repeat threads and stuff like that and hopefully changing some noobs into decent members

But I'm afraid you'll run into a similar problem.

If you had the ability to sticky those threads onto people's faces there would still be a great number who will ask the same answered questions, post the same posted threads, make the same "noob" mistakes over and over and over until the end of time.

The fact boils down to this:

"You can't help those who don't help themselves."

Call it cliche if you wish, I find it's highly applicable here. If someone's not willing to look for an answer in the most obvious places here (i.e. the top stickied forum topics) they certainly aren't going to listen seriously to any "disciple" of a forum.

so you're saying because we'll never stop them all, we shouldn't try?

that's like saying batman shouldn't fight crime because he'll never be able to stop crime for good. of course there will always be crime, but batman still goes and fights it to help people. the fact that his mission to eradicate crime in gotham will never be finished doesn't stop him from trying.

the point is, we'll never stop people from being trolls and flamers, but if there's even the smallest chance that we can make this place a bit better, we have to try.

Trolls are people who have increase our forums popularity 375% more than the second most popular board on tv.com .

that only counts message numbers. more than half of those messages are pointless and thoughtless. quality over quantity, eh?

That happens at every tv.com forum but meh; it's a benefit to us.

And good grammar? This was what my friend wrote in an AP english literature exam.

    :
Because this writer is so grammatical and excellent with language, this passage is really difficult for me to understand.

    LOL.

Regardless, my feeling is you don't have to be organized under some weird banner and have votings and disciples and unessecary junk like that to tell a 'troll' what to do.

Nobody's going to come in here and look at your signature icon and be like "Whoa, damn, that's one of the Disciples of the Dragon! I better not post this question that's already been answered 1049 times, because they might post back!"

I don't get the whole mentality of the 'cult/following'-like aspects of this deal. The goal and intention I have no problem with. The implementation is what I feel is moving towards elitism.

Well you certainly aren't doing anything to help so please stop trying to tell me that I'm stupid to have hope.

I don't ever recall calling anyone stupid, and I certainly don't feel that I haven't done my part here. I'm merely stating my opinion on this whole matter. I'm sure it's disagreeable to many here, but don't assume I'm slandering individuals, because that is highly inaccurate.

as I wrote weeks ago in here

the "disciples" are voted, and I like to think the disciples take it as a responsibility, not as a "privilege" or license to post "more freely", and others members of this forum take it as a recognition of "the disciple's earn of trust, and that they are good examples of thoughtful posters"

plus anyone can make a "promise to follow OWLism"

i think he should post his objections to the disciples. we have to justify our cause and we can't do that if we tell people who disagree to just leave.

besides, this thread is always so dead, we need something to do here!

hmmmm... I think u have to look at it from uchiha's point of view. I got the impression that he thinks that the diciples are some kind of elitist group that are trying to form a cliche (sp?) of high post count memebrs. Kinda like giving some posters thier very own personal spotlight and ignoring those that don't follow owlism or whatever. Now I know that that's not the purpose of this thread, but it seems like it that way.

but what uchiha doesn't know is why this thread was created in the first place. Warning, history lesson alert! Way back when, this forum was in a really mess, trolls were rampant and mods/editors were no where in sight. (And I'm not talking about the funny trolls either, I'm talking about the annoying ones that kept on flaming and exchanging "ur stoopid", "yea, well, ur even stoopider!" arguments with each other) Frankly, it was really annoying to have all these spam comments, and ppl fighting over whose mom was a bigger slut. So I guess denddong decided to make this thread to discourage trolling, flaming, etc. And at first I was skeptical myslef, I think even I ridiculed the thread the first time voting happedend. (it;s cause I'm just cool like that ) anyways, trolling activity actaully went down. Now I dunno if this thread actaully made that happen, or if it was just a coincidence, but what i do know is that when ppl started to put the phrase "owlism: a thought poster who blah, blah, blah" in their sigs, there seemed to be less insulting posts and more intelligent posting all-around.

anyways, uchiha, just to let u know that being a discple isn't all that's its cracked up to be. I mean, I've seen very little to no groveling before my feet. And good luck trying to get ppl to build a 80 ft statue of yourself in solid gold.
