I know the religion and customs in the Avatar universe are Eastern, but did anyone else think of the Pieta (image of Mary cradling the dead body of Christ) at the end when Katara was holding Aang? He is supposed to save the world, so to me at least this cemented her role as his seragate??mother not his true love.

that was the first thing I thought of, I was totally shocked and my mouth was wide open cause my fav character had been killed in the worst time possible, then I was like, OMG that's Mary and Jesus...

I think the past few episodes tho, have pretty much proven to me anyhow that Katara is in love with Aang, not sure how aang is after going into the avatar state, if he had to let go, but I think Katara is finally totally into him.

I bet you got this from Wikipedia.
    Or maybe you didn't.
It says it in the episode trivia by the way...

This show is full of eastern mysticism. From the chakra points and cosmic energy, to ying-yang, everything being connected, to the spirit world and reincarnation. The western Christian image of Mary and her child is famous, but also used in eastern hindu scenes, as well as even anchient egyptian. So you can't tell for sure. I am a christian myself, and i know what and what not to believe about avatar. I don't know about the scene at the end, it could have just been a coincedence.

I thought that part where azula zapped him was spoofing of anime were everyone stands idle while their opponent charges up a super mega-attack: just shoot him in mid-power up idiots! Congratulation Azula for beating the anime superpowered melee fight clich??! But sure spoofing chirstianity is good to.

I noticed it too. Didn't think much of it though, when I saw it I just thought: "That reminds me of that statue...whats it called?"
Then I got distracted when Iroh came to the rescue.

Oh, and loekynyl...YES, all those 50-zillion movie scenes of the lady holding the dying "sacrificial lamb"??harken back to??the pieta imagery! ??There is religious symbolism everywhere, Christian and otherwise, if you know where to look.?? A lot of it's so deeply ingrained in the culture that??many aren't even aware of the tie-in to religion.
