I'm making this topic because im having trouble not to see Toph as a helpless depressed girl. I think the reason for this, is that she tends to walk a bit ''depressive'' the last few episodes??(sorry, my english isnt well enough to explain this any better, but i guess u got the point). for example,??she always looks down at the ground. I know this is because she's blind and because she hates BSS, but still, i think the writers should ''cheer her up a bit''. I understand that she's lost her family (which she loved) in order to come with Aang and his friends, but she made that choice because she wanted more action and fights in her life. Well, she pretty much got those things right?

    what do you think?

i think she did, because the first thing she asked her parents after they found out about her bending powers, was if this would change anything about the way they felt for her. you wont ask someone such a thing if u dont love/like that person/those persons.

I think so too. She seems more independent and is facing the outside world. With the help of the Aang gang, Toph seems more useful to the group.

Every kid loves their parents and their parents love them. Toph's parents were doing what they felt was in her best interest, they are ignorant and naive but that's not really their fault, in this case.

In the instance of Toph, I think she's not so much depressed as simply aggressive. And she's aggressive because of how she's been treated for being blind.

Not every kid loves thier parents, that's a big assumption.

Yeah. I don't like my parents jk. I do. But there are some children who despises them just because they can be too protective for their child and the kid thinks it's wrong.

I think Toph loved her parents, why else do you think she would have put up with living in the world they created for her even though she hated it so much, I mean what other that her parents??was keeping her there?

Unless their parents beat them to near death, etc, it's almost fact that every child loves their parents. Especially if they are TWELVE and don't know any better. I've worked with children for years and abused or not, every one of them has loved their parents.??

However, this isn't the question. The question is, did Toph, and I answered that. She could have ran away at any point, she didn't. She said it herself, even with the tone of "yeah but". She said "But they're my PARENTS", because she knew they loved her, she knew she loved them and she didn't want to defy them because she knew they were only doing what they thought was best for her.

Toph only acts depressed and aggressive in response to her up bringing - not being allowed to fend or defend herself, under a strict rule and regime. She has basically been unhappy all of her life and has still yet to comprehend how she is finally free. Over time however, she is being shown to gradually drop her barrier to the others ege accepting Katara's advice in training Aang.

As for her parents, of course she loves them! Granted not all kids love their parents, but I would be extremely surprised to find a kid who hates their parents because they love the child so much to allow it to come to harm. Toph just wants them to realise that she isn't defenceless.

I have noticed that she hangs down her head a lot. That may be because she's never really needed to maintain eye contact.

ye i also noticed that, but she DID leave an open space when she was training Aang in ''Biter Work'' (u know, that part in which Aang had to push her back over the drawn line).
but that also just might be because she knew it would take more nerve to push her back then, and thats exactly what she wanted Aang to get.

    right...

She's blind. She doesn't care how she looks or what she does, and how she has to be happy all the time to please everyone. As she quoted, "It's one of the perks of being blind. I don't care what anyone thinks of me. I know who I am."

    And then she cried.

appearently she DOES care how she looks like, and especially how people think about her. u said it urself, she cried after saying those things. also she was pretty happy about ''feeling girly'' after her day out with Katara, so i guess she does miss the feeling of being ''girly'' sometimes... im not a girl myself, but i can immagine that if you are one and you have never given the ability/chance of being a girl, it could be pretty painfull. anyways, she's changed a lot already... im curious if she'll walk straight up again soon
