Im only starting this 'cause on the episode "Cave of Two Lovers", they said the Badgermoles were the first earthbenders and the two lovers learned it from them.Soo that means people could learn airbending from the flying bison. Also if people can learn another element from animals whats the point of the avatar. Why cant earthbenders learn airbending? The spirit of the element needs to be born into the person for them to be a bender, that is known for sure and is all I can tell you without the rest being pure speculation. But, there is only one Flying Bison left, so it's not like everyone can learn from Appa.

yea, i think bending is like a gene. you have to be born with the skill( so i guess sokka could water bend.) this begs the question," what if people from different tribes have kids? this will probably never be answered tho.

I think bending is is both spiritual and genetic. For example, I think it's possible for the earth kingdom people living at the northern air temple to crop up some air benders. This is because they respect and live in the sky (use their gliders to get around). But it would be a gradual change, it would be many many generations before air benders were born to once earth kingdom refugees.
