I kinda always thought that it was about Roku more than Aang...
I've always wondered exactly HOW did Roku die since it seems odd that many other people in the Avatar world seem to live long lives and you would think by looking at Roku that he was no older than King Bumi & the Guru, if not younger than them.
And then of course you realize that when Aang was 12, nobody knew he was the Avatar except for the Monks at the Southern Air Temple and they normally wouldn't have told him until he was 16, but decided he needed to be aware because of the pending trouble stirring in the Fire Nation.?? So this 'trouble' could have possibly begun during Roku's tenure, then he disappeared and it was coming to a boiling point so to speak??12 years later... and since nobody knew where the new Avatar was (although they knew he had been reincarnated into the Air Nation), its not like Aang disappeared, it was simply he had not been announced to the world yet.

did it actually ever say Gran Gran saw the start of the war?...sorry but it's been a while since I saw the first episode. Point still stands though, just because the life span in the Avatar world is higher doesn't mean the people are any more vulnerable to good old fashioned germs than us |
Agree about the 'old age' and 'sickness' ideas ... but I do think there was more to Roku's death, don't know why, just a feeling... especially because the Fire Sage's were meant to be loyal to the "Avatar" not just a fire avatar.?? That is the impression I got from the one Fire Sage that helped Aang in the Winter Soltice pt 2.?? Yet, the Fire Sages had now placed their loyalty in the Fire Lord.?? Makes you think something might have happened that made them fear the Fire Lord.?? Maybe something that they witnessed and through generations passed on ... dunno, just a theory.
