This thing has bother me ever since the first avatar episode. In the introduction Avatar Roku is seen bending the elements. So they say he suddenly he vanished. I think he was a??spy and the fire nation??cought him and killed him. But tell me what you think about what happened to him.

When they say that, they're just using Roku because he was the Avatar before Aang. What they mean to say is that Aang disappeared.

He died. Then Aang came along and he disappeared....Aang's 12, so he'd been Avatar for 12 years before the iceburg thing...And no 2 Avatar's can be around at the same time...So yeah, he's been dead!

as other people said, they meant that aang is the person that disappears. They show Avatar Roku because they want to show the show as more appealing so the show a fully blown avatar at full power.

I kinda always thought that it was about Roku more than Aang...

I've always wondered exactly HOW did Roku die since it seems odd that many other people in the Avatar world seem to live long lives and you would think by looking at Roku that he was no older than King Bumi & the Guru, if not younger than them.

And then of course you realize that when Aang was 12, nobody knew he was the Avatar except for the Monks at the Southern Air Temple and they normally wouldn't have told him until he was 16, but decided he needed to be aware because of the pending trouble stirring in the Fire Nation.?? So this 'trouble' could have possibly begun during Roku's tenure, then he disappeared and it was coming to a boiling point so to speak??12 years later... and since nobody knew where the new Avatar was (although they knew he had been reincarnated into the Air Nation), its not like Aang disappeared, it was simply he had not been announced to the world yet.

For some reason I just thought when they said "When the world needed him most, he vanished..." I thought that was talking about just the Avatar in general not specifically Aang or Roku...but meh if yall wanna think so much into that go right ahead I won't dog you for it

just because Bumi and the Guru have exceptionally long lives doesn't mean everyone in the Avatar world lives to be that long. The average life span in the US is currently in the 80's but you still see plenty of people making it to the 90's and 100's.

Besides, at approximatly 112 years old Bumi, though still in great physical shape, is definatly not all there in the head. As for the Guru, well, he's a Guru, a spiritual advisor. He just took old age better than Bumi did.

Roku probably just died of old age, maybe a disease or something. Nothing ever said the Avatar couldn't die from a bad virus just like anyone else

did it actually ever say Gran Gran saw the start of the war?...sorry but it's been a while since I saw the first episode.

Point still stands though, just because the life span in the Avatar world is higher doesn't mean the people are any more vulnerable to good old fashioned germs than us

Agree about the 'old age' and 'sickness' ideas ... but I do think there was more to Roku's death, don't know why, just a feeling... especially because the Fire Sage's were meant to be loyal to the "Avatar" not just a fire avatar.?? That is the impression I got from the one Fire Sage that helped Aang in the Winter Soltice pt 2.?? Yet, the Fire Sages had now placed their loyalty in the Fire Lord.?? Makes you think something might have happened that made them fear the Fire Lord.?? Maybe something that they witnessed and through generations passed on ... dunno, just a theory.

For the pilot, when Katara is speaking, she says that Gran Gran used to talk about the old days when they were at peace or something. I don't think it makes sense, 'cause then Gran Gran would have to be like 30 or 40 years older than Pakku, and Pakku would have had to proposed to her when she was about 50 or 60 years old... IF they consider that age to be a young woman I only think Gran Gran is about 70 or 80 years old.

I was wondering that too.?? All the other Avatars looked pretty young in the episode The Avatar State and when the gang was at the Southern Air Temple, like Avatar Kyoshi.?? Avatar Roku looked the oldest to me.
