This is my entire post, I decided to put it together to make it easier. Scorchingflame must or somehow read. Redoblante, care to read too?
Kela-Dasman & Agua-Mar: Waterbenders. Saze: Intermediate Firebender. Evelet: Swords master.
The North Pole Days
Day 31: Morning
Water condensed on the outside of the panoramic window Kela was looking out of. His lazy eyes pondered about, looking at the North Pole from a southern view. His chin was resting on the windowsill and his breath occasionally fogged his view, in which case, he would stop breathing for a second. The sun was rising on the horizon, and it turned the North Pole a bit orange. He was too awake to go back to sleep, and too tired to do anything important. Saze and Mar were still asleep. The night before, Kela fell asleep in the chair next to the fireplace. He had crawled to the windowsill when he couldn't go back to sleep, but he forgot why he went there in the first place. The sunlight was bugging him, but it was so beautiful that he had to keep looking.
After Kela sat next to the window for a long time, watching the sun come up, Mar got up as well, stretching and yawning. She looked at Kela and tilted her head in inquisition. "Good morning Kela, what are you doing?" She asked. Kela sighed and created more fog on the window. "Nothing. I can't think this early." He said. Mar turned back around and entered the bathroom, closing the curtain. She yawned before saying, "Ok, well, I'm going to get myself ready for the day." She turned the water on and Kela heard a cry, "Eeeeeekkk!!! The water is really cold!!!" Mar immediately turned the water off, and walked out in her towel. "Could Saze possibly heat the water?" She asked.
At this time, Kela heard another yawning in the room to the left, and Saze woke up, walked out of the doorway and asked, "Did somebody step on a cat or something."
He looked at Kela and saw him looking out the window. "What are you doing? He asked. "Nothing much." Said Kela. "Mar was about to shower, but the water is cold,"
Mar looked at Saze. "Could you heat the water please?" Saze wiped his face and yawned again. "Ok," he said, "But no more screaming, Ok?" He put on some shoes and started walking out the door. "Hey Kela, could you come with me?"
Kela was still staring out the window. The sun was higher now. "Ok." He said. 'I have nothing better to do right now.' He thought. He put on his shoes too, and grabbed his money.
Kela and Saze walked down the stairs to the receptionist. But on the counter, the sign said, be right back.
"Well, I suppose we could come back later." Said Kela. He turned to Saze and asked, "Why don't we walk around a bit until she comes back?"
They exited the building and walked around the block. There were some canoes traveling in the canals, with packages and cargo, probably for merchandise. And there was a dock near their building, near the back door of the apartments that had Kela's boat rigged to the shore. They took a half hours trip into town. There they bought some food, which consisted of more bread, some cheese, and bacon. From above, the apartment looked liked a square, that was traced by the canal on three sides, except the entrance. And the sidewalks surrounded the apartment as well.
Saze and Kela returned to the apartments and the receptionist was there, and Kela was holding the food in a bag. Saze turned to Kela and asked, "Hey Kela, didn't you want to get a teapot and teacups there too?"
"Damn." Said Kela, snapping his fingers.
The receptionist had just put the sigh saying, Be Right Back away and put up the sign saying, May I help you?
Kela approached the counter of the receptionist with a question.
But by this time, Mar had come down from the apartment with her towel, still wet and angry.
"Where. Is. The. Heater?" She demanded in question. The receptionist was un-phased, but Saze and Kela were quiet and a bit afraid of this wrath. The receptionist kept working on her papers, writing notes on one sheet of paper to her left, and reading the paper on her right. "Well, I don't know about heaters. We haven't had a heater since." The receptionist said. "Actually we discouraged heaters after a disaster, but if you want to know about the system of our water supply, I'll show you."
She pulled out a helpful diagram of aqueducts. She pointed to various pictures as she talked to express her point. "The water comes from the canals. From the canals, they go through a filter. The water all around us is pressurized from waterbending workers who create enough pressure in the building to give water all day. But from the tanks, it goes straight to the pipes."
She put the diagram away and looked down again. Kela scratched his head and tried to think of a solution to the cold water. But instead he asked, "You know a lot about this stuff. Are you really a receptionist?" The reception looked up and said, "It's only a part time job. I've been studying to improve the aqueducts of the North Pole and heating supply without causing any environmental problems." She looked at Saze and said, "Well, you're the firebender right? You can heat the pipes to your friends shower if you want, but in return, would you heat the water in my apartment as well?"
Saze sighed and said, "Sure."
The receptionist showed them downstairs into a basement that had the tank of water and pipes that lead to every room. On the pipes were the numbers and function of each pipe to each room. There was a pipe per room. From the doorway of the basement, the receptionist lit a candle, but Saze's flame was brighter, and he led the way in the basement. From the door, it started from room 300, and spiraled down parallel to the staircase. A while later, they found the pipes for room 254 and room 114, which was the receptionist's room on the first floor. The receptionist turned around and said, "Alright, this is the where your water comes from. I must return to the desk now. And at sunset, could you heat the water, Saze?" Saze bowed his head and said. "I will, thank you for helping our friend." The receptionist walked back up the stairs, and Mar scurried up the stair to make it back into the shower. Kela started making his way up as well, but he turned around and said, "I'll let you know when she's done, I'll also make sure she doesn't take too long, ok?"
"Thanks." Said Saze.
Kela walked back up the stairs back to the apartment carrying the food. He walked up to the apartment and saw that Mar was standing outside the door. "Lock yourself out?" He said. Mar was still shivering as he unlocked and opened the door for her. She walked back into the shower. Kela placed the bag of food next to the fireplace. He pulled out some fish jerky for Klearae. He heard another noise similar to the first, "Eeeeeekkk! This water is really hot!" said Mar. As Kela was leaving, he shouted, "Don't take too long Mar!"
Kela left the apartment and went upstairs to the roof to visit the Hawk house. He walked outside to the roof and walked inside the hawk house. In there, the hawks and birds were squawking. Klearae flew quietly down from the roost of the hawk house and landed on his shoulder. He fed her the fish jerky and scratched her softly.
After spending time with Klearae, Kela went back down stairs to the apartment. Entering the apartment, he found Mar was already dressed and ready to go places. She was sitting in one of the chairs surrounding the Pai Sho table, tinkering with the pieces. Kela waved to Mar, "I'm going to take a quick show while Saze is still heating the water." He said.
After Kela got ready to go, he went down stairs to tell Saze to stop heating the pipes. When Saze got back up stairs, and they were all together, they sat around the Pai Sho table and cleared the pieces off. Kela got the food out so everyone could eat before the tour of the North Pole. Loren would arrive at noontime, so once they were done eating, and when Saze was ready, they would meet up with her.
Kela finished eating early and decided to ask some questions. "So Saze, what if you got a job as human heater?" Saze supposedly misheard Kela and questioned, with his mouth partly full, "A human eater?!"
They finished eating their food and Saze went to the showers next. He would have to fill the tub with water and heat it first before entering it, the perfect time waster until Loren arrived. Kela and Mar cleaned up the mess from the table and put the leftovers away in the corner. Then they killed time playing Pai Sho waiting for Saze.
After Saze finished getting ready, it was noon. They walked outside of the building to find Loren waiting for them. She wore blue robes with white fur fringe and a liteblue bow in her hair. Kela thought she was cute, but he wasn't the flirting or dating type. The three of them bowed their head in return. "I am ready to take you on your tour, are you all ready?" She asked. Saze thought about Evelet and said, "Can we visit our friend Evelet before we leave?" Loren tilted her head to the right again and said, "Sure, follow me." Kela and Mar were munching on some of the leftovers from breakfast that they had earlier to pass the time for their stomachs.
They walked up the staircase that Kela remembered being carried on by the stretcher days before. They were walking to the same hospital where they were taken care of before. The order of which they were walking was Kela, Mar, and Saze, up the staircase with ice railings and lanterns every few meters. As they were walking up the stairs, Kela looked at the back of Loren's neck and did not see a betrothal necklace. 'Well, I am going to be here for a while...' he thought, 'We could just hang out a little and become better acquainted.' In this instance, Kela was not sure of what he wanted to do. 'If I become attached to anybody, it would never work.' He thought. At the top of the stairs was the hospital, with the insignia for the water tribe carved above the door, and a plus sign next to it. They walked in and approached another receptionist, whom of which was female. She looked up from her papers and greeted them. "Hello everyone, and hi Loren. Are you just visiting today?" She asked. Loren nodded her head and said, "Yes, there is a friend belonging to this party that is still in the hospital. Loren took them down a hallway on the left leading them to the same familiar place where Kela was in his hospital room.
They approached a curtain where Evelet was. She pulled back the curtain to find Evelet being healed by two other female waterbenders who were wearing the same uniform as Loren was, only for indoors, which was without fur. Evelet's leg and arm glowed as they healed him thoroughly. Loren placed her hand on his stomach and pulled her hand across his heart and stopped at the crown of his forehead. "You can stop for now." She told the healers. Evelet woke up and grunted. "Unggh. How long have I been asleep?" he asked. Mar and Kela sat in some chairs on the left side of the room next to the food. Mar was closest to the bedside table with the food, and she gave it to Evelet. Evelet munched on the baked seaweed, sauced with soy, and enjoyed his juice with a chip like snack. Saze sat next to the right side of the bed and sat in a chair next to Evelet. Loren picked up the clipboard with Evelet's history and said, "This is the first time you've been awake in a while." Evelet sat up a little straighter and shook his head. Then he looked at Saze. "Sazey!" he said happily.
Saze smiled at him kindly and said, "Don't call me that..."
They left Evelet smiling and waving goodbye. He would become better in approximately 5 more days, according to Loren. But for now they left the hospital and started traveling to the northwestern part of the North Pole. From where the apartment was, they were in the center of the country. Back at the apartment building, there was a canoe that Kela had not noticed earlier. There was a waterbender at the front of the boat that would be moving them throughout the city. His name was Hans. He was very big and burly. He made the boat sink forward. Everyone else sat towards the back of the boat, from Saze to Loren.
"Alright Hans, we're ready." Said Loren. Hans started moving the boat forward gently with his tree trunk arms. They started traveling throughout the canal. It was pointless to remember what direction they were headed in, because there were so many turns. Loren started talking about the history of the North Pole, how it came to be, it's history in general. It was a way to pass the time as they took a trip to the Northwestern part of the country.
When they reached their destination, Hans made the boat move more slowly throughout the canal. Loren started talking about some of the landmarks. They passed an opening in the canal to the right that featured a plaza with a statue of a person in the middle. Loren pointed to the statue with her right arm and said, "That is master Pakku, the man who saved our country." They were cruising nonchalant until Kela posed a question to Loren, "Saved it from what?"
"Oh, we dare not speak it." She said quickly with a smile. 'Strike one for Loren...' Thought Kela.
Hans drifted the boat down the river to another part of town where there was a giant shipyard with wooden ships and blue sails. There were many workers building boats in this shipyard. "This is our shipyard! We build many boats and sails here! After all, if we didn't have this many boats, we wouldn't be able to evacuate in case of an emergency!"
She turned around again.
"From what?" asked Kela.
"Stuff." Said Loren. "Bad things, like...giant...polar bears..."
'Strike two...' thought Kela. Hans kept propelling himself down the river. 'What was this thing that the people of the North Pole feared so much?'
They came to another part of town with a beautiful waterfall, reflecting the rainbow to them. As they passed it, Loren said, "This where the clean water that isn't filtered comes from." She said. "Although it is an abundant supply, it is more convenient to make it closer to facilities." Here they made a short stop to eat some food at a local restaurant.
They turned around and headed back home on a different route. On the way, they passed a facility for clothing. It was a type of market for clothing, accessories and voodoo. Mar looked at it with eager eyes. Then Saze said, "Don't quit on us now Mar." Mar looked back at Saze with a slightly scorned looked. Saze took back what he said. "Sorry, sorry, I don't really care if you're into that."
There was another store on the way back, closer to the apartments, called "Lee's Place." Kela saw a few people enter it as they sailed past in the boat. It looked like a good place to go.
They arrived back at the apartment building when the sun began to set. They exited the boat. Kela helped Loren out of the boat and she smiled at him. Immediately after exiting the boat, it teeter-tottered back and forth to support Hans's weight. He carefully used his waterbending to rebalance the boat before he fell over. Loren turned around and said, "Thank you Hans, you were such a kind rower." She said. "Be careful on the way back to the docks, ok?" Hans grunted a smile and waved back. He rowed away back into the canals, which were being obscured by more fog. Loren walked them into the building and waved again. "It was a pleasure being your guide today." Said Loren. Kela waved back and said, "It was a pleasure being your tourist." He said awkwardly. Mar nudged him a little. Loren bowed and they bowed in return. Backing out slowly, she said, "I hope we can have a second tour tomorrow same time same place?" she said, as though speaking to Kela. Kela replied, "Sure." He said. Mar nudged him again. "Well, she was going to give a tour anyway!" He whispered to Mar. She exited the building an began walking home in the foggy night. The group began walking upstairs when the receptionist at the counter said something, "Um, Saze, would you mind heating the water pipes? I'm going to take a bath now." Saze stopped walking up the stairs. "You guys keep going, I'll be up for a while." He said. "Sorry, I almost forgot." He said. The receptionist left to go to her room, which was on the first floor. Saze walked down into the basement and began heating the pipe that led to her room. Kela ran back down the stairs to tell Saze one more thing.
"Hey Saze, don't be afraid to make it too hot, I'm sure these people like hot water since they live so coldly!" He said.
Saze smiled. "I hear you Kela, but I'm not going to do that to her intentionally." He said in return.
Kela and Mar got ready for bed. They played Pai Sho until Saze returned. "Hey Saze, could you light the fireplace?" Asked Kela. Saze sighed. "More fire? Sure?" He said unsurely. The fireplace lit up from a dark blue to a soft yellow. "Tired?" Kela asked.
"Yes. I'm going to be now." Saze said. Mar yawned. "Me too." She said.
Kela stayed in front of the fireplace and enjoyed the warmth until he fell asleep. He couldn't keep his attention on what he was thinking about. He wondered what he should do. But he fell asleep sideways in the chair like before, with his feet in the air and his head uncomfortably tilted. He was too lazy to fix his posture, which resulted in him falling asleep even faster.
