Byrke should hopefully do a good job with it, but it just seems a little too much of a thrill-ride for me to have the 21-century failure taking on such an elaborate story. For god's sake, it took him two hours to explain why some chick was swimming in a hotel pool at night! But still, I'm not losing hope. Tough like a rock... or a diamond... or maybe M. Night Shyamalan... Wait, scratch that last one. Shyamalan is known for the tears.

Have a little faith, would ya? Bryke will be there to make sure M. Night doesn't get out of hand. Also, M. Night is an Avatar fan. He knows how to not ruin the whole series. Deep breaths.

Everyone seems so pessimistic about these movies - I think we should do the opposite, and be optimistic

Seriously, Shyamalan is really confident about this movie. Granted, Shyamalan is confident about all his movies. But for this one he is even more confident than usual - at one point he was quoted as saying that he thought that this could turn out to be the next Star Wars. So far we have all been praying that he manages to come somewhere close to that. But instead, what I think we should do is ask: what if he turns out to be right?

What if Avatar does indeed turn into the next Star Wars or Lord of the Rings - and for the first time it's potential is truly recognized? Needless to say, after that Avatar is saved. It has been several years now since the last Lord of the Rings and Star Wars movies came out, and games, special editions of the books, and other such things are still rolling out. If The Last Airbender does turn out to be a big hit, the original series will be brought back and praised as no other TV show has ever been praised (prior to the release of the movies, the Lord of the Rings was considered a very average series, and now it is considered by many to be one of the greatest works in all of English Literature). If Shyamalan and Bryke can pull this off, the other shows that we have clashed with for so long won't even be able to touch us.

Of course there are a few things that the movie will (in my opinion) need before and after it is released:

    - Play down the connection with Nickelodeon. Although it would be great if Nick decided to support the movie with a lot of advertizing, I think that it would be most helpful if people didn't know about the Nickelodeon connection.

    - An awsome trailer is a must. Somebody should recommend some of Raven's trailers to Shyamalan - if adapted for the movies it would probably help tremendously.

    - Even if we, the original Avatards, hate the movie, we must support it. The first Lord of the Rings movie was almost killed when it recieved scathing reviews from the fans of the original books. The same thing must not happen with Avatar - popularity is popularity after all.

My God. From your first couple paragraphs, I almost died of excitement. If this is the new Star Wars... Oh my God. Ahahhahaa. I can't get over it. I really do think this has the potential to become the next big, no, HUGE thing. Avatar is far better than any other show/book out there. IMO, at least. And probably in yours, as well, because you're reading this. If this movie is a success, just THINK about what that would do to the series. I mean, just try and imagine it. Axrendale is right, nothing would be able to touch us. I'm practically salivating at the mouth just thinking about it But I will support the movie no matter what. We have to do whatever we can to promote Avatar. It's our duty as Avatards.

I want to take the chance on expanding the perfection. I mean, there is a slight chance that the movie will epically fail, but the chance of an epic win is SO worth it. I mean, just IMAGINE. Everyone will be enlightened about Avatar. It'll be beautiful. I can finally come out to my friends about my Avatardness in its entirety.

Of course, the 690 days (and counting) that we have to wait is a fairy large obstacle to surmount. Fortunatly - we do have an event to look forward to in the much closer future - next Febuary Avatar will be at the next comic-con, and Bryke are sure to have some kind of announcement for us - about the movies, about Ursa, about something. According to the flyer that by now everyone has surely seen, somewhere around Febuary the rumored 3 hour long movies/mini-series is scheduled to be released. So in Febuary we may well get a boost for our avatardism - but in this regard we should not get too optimistic, as there has been no official confirmation.

However, even if there is no mini-series/hour-long-movies, I think that we could pull it off. When the original Star Wars trilogy was first being released, there was a three year gap between each movie. Even more impressively, I have spoken to adult Star Wars fanatics who managed to maintain a fanatical loyalty to Star Wars for an astonishing twenty years waiting for the prequel trilogy. Thankfully, we got off lightly with less than two years.

It really is too big an ask to request that people keep Avatar as the center of their lives for more than 600 days. My advice is this: even if you let it drop out temporarily, don't let it go. Build a shrine to Avatar out of your DVDs in the corner of your room, get a couple of calendars and start a countdown for the movies, and watch and fall in love with the series every now and then when you feel like watching something good just for old time's sake.

Let Avatar become a part of your life in the way that Harry Potter became a part of your life during the stagering break between the 4th and 5th books - silent, not thought of often, but always present, ready to burst out whenever the moment is right (I can remember starting up Harry Potter theory conversations with people during the oddest times over th course of that hiatus).

how is that pessimism? is the movie differing from the series or something?

Sorry, for a moment there I thought you were advocating that the movies should not be made. I too believe that they've got a perfect story on their hands - you are right in that it should not be tampered with except when necessary to fit it into a movie.

I just had a thought; if the movies do turn out to be really successful, the origianl series is infact guarenteed to make a come-back. When I saw the first Lord of the Rings movie, I couldn't wait for the next one to come out, and instead rushed down to the bookstore and bought the books. If every fan of a very successful movie were to buy the DVDs to find out what happens next, or watch it on TV if it's still on/brought back, Avatar will ahev made a brilliant comeback.

If you think this through properly, this movie will die. Imagine you had never seen the greatness of the avatar series, there was no such thing as avatar, and you heard a new movie was coming out about a boy who moves air and so on. If you heard this without knowing anything about the avatar series, which most people are, they would hate the idea. I can almost guarantee this movie will fail in the UK. No doubt

I completely disagree. When I first heard of the premise of this show, I was completely sucked in. The idea of bending the elements has always been a fantasy of mine, and I'm sure millions of others if the series has gone so well. Plus, how can anyone NOT want to see this movie after an epic trailer? I'm sure the trailer will be beyond epic. Trailers really only consist of special effects and kung fu action. I have no doubt in my mind that this movie will have terrific kung fu action and special effects.

You know what? I agree with ya' guys! It took me a while to notice, but I've honestly never seen Shyamalan so excited to make a movie! Hopefully that excitement will turn to a level of enginuity and creativity none of us have seen before! And no, that honestly wasn't sarcastic, I feel reinvigorated...

YAY FOR OPTIMISM! Not only is M. Night an Avatar fan, but Bryke will be by his side during EVERYTHING. In my mind, nothing can go wrong as long as those two things stay true.

This movie is going to be a disaster. It will probably ruin Avatar for me, and I will likely never watch Avatar again because of this movie.

I hope you're not serious. If you are, then you were never much of an Avatar fan to begin with if something so small can break your obsession, so it's not much of a loss.

The only thing that could possibly bring this movie down is M. Night, but that's canceled out by Bryke being there.

    That's the spirit

Don't think about what will happen if the movies fail. Instead, just imagine what will happen if the movies succeed brilliantly
