No I don't know where Zuko's mom is.

But I do know how Aang got into the avatar state and why katara wasn't a factor and how the rock in his back makes sense.

So, Aang left the guru and the guru said until Aang unlocks his last chakra he wont be able to go into the avatar state. then in "Crossroads of Destiny", Aang is losing badly and goes into the crystal teepee, turning his back on Katara, then he unlocks his final chakra and masters the avatar state (yes Mike and Bryan even said so in the comentary of "Crossroads of Destiny") then Aang gets hit by lightning, Aang dies, but then is brought back to life by Katara and her spirit water. In "The Awakening", katara says there is a lot of twisted up energy in Aang's wound. Back in the escape from the spirit world online comic, Yangchen says that Aang's spirit is ok but his phisical body needs healing and by this she means that until the energy twisted up in Aang's back is put into place he wont be able to go into the avatar state. now in the finale Aang gets pushed into the rock with so much force that it rearanges and straightens the energy in his back, giving him access to the avatar state. But, because Aang is in so much danger he is forced into the avatar state, which is why he didn't have complete control of himself while he was in the avatar state, he only had enough control to get himself out (note: Aang only has complete control of his body while in the avatar state if he puts himself into it).

So, Aang already opened his final chakra and mastered the avatar state before the finale, the avatar state just wasn't available to him. (I'm sure all of you have season two box set, or at least all of the dvd volumes, watch "Crossroads of Destiny" with the comentary on)

Also, Aang can be in love with katara and have a family and everything, he just has to put the world before his family and all attachments, this is what the seventh chakra means. (proof of this is Avatar Roku and his family in "The Avatar and The Firelord)

But what about in "The Invasion" when Aang says his seventh chakra is locked? Well, it was either a poor choice of words only meaning that you cant go into the avatar state, a mistake (eek! I hope not), or when you're energy gets twisted while in the avatar state, your last chakra just gets locked autamatically until the energy can flow correctly through it again.

People not knowing or understanding this have often changed their oppinions on the finale, and a lot of people think the rock in aangs back is what made him master the avatar state(no no no), so I just wanted to let people who were confused about the finale get the answers they want... besides the answer to the popular question "where's Zuko's mom?"...

I could have sworn that I've posted pretty much exactly what you said several times before now. You wouldn't happen to have read one of my posts would you?

Still, I guess there should be a thread about this made by someone who is (apparently) neutral in the shipping war, so I'll support you in this thread.

    Good job

If the energy along Aang's spine was "twisted up" at the location of his wound, it would likely be his solar plexis or heart chakra that was blocked.

Which would also mean that the chakras above it, the throat, brow and crown chakras would be blocked as well. So Aang's statement before the invasion would not necessarily be incorrect. Just not the whole story. He would have had other chakras blocked as well. He just chose to mention the crown chakra because it's the most important.

To me, in the finale, it didn't look like Aang went into the Avatar State voluntarily. It looked like just the spontaneous transformation we've seen before when his life has been threatened. Though he did display control over it when he was able to voluntarily leave it.

But the very fact that he ALMOST killed Ozai suggests he was not in control, up until that point.

As far as the attachment issue is concerned, I think you've got it right. As long as he wasn't unduly fixated on Katara above everything else, like he was in The Guru (BTW: I'm still pissed at him for his decision at the end of that episode ) there's no reason he couldn't balance loving her and still fulfilling his duties as Avatar.

I actually thought Aang was in control of the Avatar State. I thought of it as this: Aang's Avatar State was stopped in the crystal catacombs, and once the energy flowed back in the proper way, the Avatar State opened up again and Aang went into it involuntarily. I think that Aang did have control over it, because Aang was all "Fire Lord Ozai, you and your forefathers have.....' He was then going to kill Ozai with his elemental twister thingy, but he stopped, which is why I think he's still in control of the Avatar State.

good point about the chakras, I think you're right, all of the energy in his body was flowing incorrectly, but since the the final one was the gateway to the avatar state he only chose to mention it

Yeah...I guess I didnt explain it very well in my other thread. I meant what you just wrote. I knew he had mastered the avatar state before, but the rock straightened the energy. And I thought that by letting go of earthly attachments, meant letting go of all emotions and thought other than protecting the world. The fact that Avatar Kyoshi is empty and lifeless, Avatar Roku never shows much emotion, and Yangchen wasnt able to help Aang as much as she could have with his turmoil during the finale because her only thoughts were about protecting the world as a whole, and not each individual being, was sort of proof of this.

Exactly. He wouldn't have come so close to killing Ozai in the first place if he was in full control.

Hey, I've got a question that I might as well bring up here. Remember in "The Avatar Returns" when Avatar State Aang uses waterbending on Zuko, before regular Aang knows waterbending? That seems to suggest that, in the Avatar State, he was already capable of bending all the elements (that would make sense given that the Avatar State is the culmination of the powers of all the previous Avatars). So why, then, was it necessary for Aang to master all of the elements in his normal state> It seems to me it would have been much more effecient simply to focus on mastering the Avatar State.

Of course, there may not have been any way for the Gaang to know that, and they inadvertently took the long way around.

Plus, they had no idea how Aang would go about mastering the Avatar State. Guru Pathik contacting Aang was a stroke of Providence. Hence, him mastering all the elements in his normal state was the next best thing.

Nevermind. It seems I answered my own question.

    as funny as it sounds

in not control AS; as the past avatars take control, Aang would not have control, and would have ended killing Ozai

in "controled AS"; Aang would only be able to do what he learned, maybe in a more powerful form, but nothing outside of what he learned

well when the other avatars are talking to aang they are trying to help him and they are serious. so the fact that roku and kuruk were in love after mastering the avatar state proved that it is possible to keep what were once your attachments but just put your avatar duties before them.

Plus, they had no idea how Aang would go about mastering the Avatar State. Guru Pathik contacting Aang was a stroke of Providence. Hence, him mastering all the elements in his normal state was the next best thing.

Nevermind. It seems I answered my own question.

hehe yeah i dont think aang wanted to go fight while in the avatar state after 201, and roku didn't want him to either, they didn't want to take the chance

I thought that he wouldn't have said that or started to kill ozai if he had complete control over the avatar state. It also seemed like him going into the avatar state when the rock hit him was really fast, and it happened before he realized it

So why, then, was it necessary for Aang to master all of the elements in his normal state> It seems to me it would have been much more effecient simply to focus on mastering the Avatar State.

    as funny as it sounds

in not control AS; as the past avatars take control, Aang would not have control, and would have ended killing Ozai

in "controled AS"; Aang would only be able to do what he learned, maybe in a more powerful form, but nothing outside of what he learned
yeah thats what I thought too because aang wouldn't be in complete control of his body if he just pictured what he wanted to do and then his body just does it

People not knowing or understanding this have often changed their oppinions on the finale, and a lot of people think the rock in aangs back is what made him master the avatar state(no no no), so I just wanted to let people who were confused about the finale get the answers they want... besides the answer to the popular question "where's Zuko's mom?"...

click here to go to an earlier blog I made answering about avatar state among other things

I only read a little bit in a random spot of your blog, but I don't think the turtle had anything to do with aang going into the avatar state, otherwise there was no point in the rock in aangs back

think of it like a "damaged electrical cord" of a Radio

the turtle repaired the cord, the rock turned "on" the switch of the Iron

I dont think the lion turtle was passing energy through aang and making it pure, i think he was just showing aang how to unbend or checking the energy in aang... or just making cool looking green lights...
i cant wait for the season three box set to come out so we can watch the finale with comentary and get the answer clear
