Does anyone have any good Avatar fanfiction recommendations? It doesn't matter what it's about or what ships it advocates; as long as it's well-written.

By well-written, I mean novel quality or at least close to it. For examples of the kind of quality I'm looking for, check out my most recent Blog entry.

There's one I rather like. It's not mine, but it's good. It's called A Tangled Web.

Doesn't have to be your's, it just has to be good.

Reading the first chapter, I can tell that the writing style is better than most fanfics, and the plot is complex enough. The only problem I have is that the premise is a little far from the show, and therefor the characters are a little OOC.

Not to bad overall, but not outstanding.

    Roses of the Valley

This is an extremely good story. Hardly any of the original Avatar cast are here, it takes place at th height of Avatar Azulon's power, meaning the characters are OC's but the story's flow and spirit more than make up for that. The characters are developed and unique, action scenes are detailed and well-drawn out. The premise is that a group of Fire Nation nobles tried to secretly make peace with the Earth Kingdom but were discovered by Fire Lord Azulon and were either banished or executed. The story follows the struggles of the banished nobles, and how the war impacts their new lives and how they effect others.

    Go to fanfiction.net.

There's one called "A Koi called Bird" by FyreFlower, where the Blue Spirit rescues a young abused girl from Zhao while searching for news of Aang. Zuko takes the girl in and falls for her. I know it sounds like a bad Mary Sue story but its not, its very well wirtten. Its rated M.

There are two called "The Hunter and the Prey" and "Love Thy Enemy" by RedNovember. Both are Zutaras which I normally hate, but these two are absolutely magnificent. They leave the original storyline but are absolutely amazing. You don't have to like Zutara to enjoy these stories. Warning, the ending of the first story is incredibly sad.

There are two called "Chapter One Water" and "Chapter Two Earth" by Musical Maiden, which feature a female in place of Aang called Artymis (not a typo). The story is very good but isn't exactly well written.

"Just the Girl", which features Toph joining up with Zuko and Iroh and she teaches Zuko how to be more level headed and helps him become stronger. Its not that she's become the enemy or anything, her exact reason for helping Zuko is explained in the story. This is very good. So if you like Toph and Zuko, read this.

Then there's mine (not trying to brag) that features a female in place of Aang called Vayu (the Hindu god of wind). Its called "Neo Avatar: Book One: Water". Very descriptive and lengthy. Please read and review. I do not like flames.

I reccomend staying away from fanfiction.

If you're looking for something around the same age category, read The Bunnicula series, starting with "The Celery Stalks At Midnight". "By The Great Horn Spoon" is a funny story, as is "Matilda" and "The Witches" or anything by Roald Dahl. I'd also list Harry Potter, but I'm sure you've read it.

If you're looking for something older, Chricton is still my favorite writer, but everyone I know keeps talking up the Wheel of Time series.

    Only you can stop fanfiction.

For the most part, I don't like anything that isn't considered canon. I've seen a handful of fanfiction that aren't outright terrible, but not enough to salvage the practice in my mind.

For the most part, they are horribly written, each deal with self-insertion, and do nothing to enhance the story. They're just "This is a story about me and Aang going to the park and I fight Zuko because Aang is tied up, I save him!"

rofl, well that is quite a terrible plot i agree.?? the one that i read was actually well-written, though the writer tended to neglect some grammatical mistakes made in the first few chapters.?? (shrugs)

it's malfunctioning, so you can't do it at the moment. but, if it's stopped (i haven't checked) click on the prefs link next to the logout button. then at the bottom of the page, it shows your current icon and then it has a little scroll down thingy that let's you select a different icon according to a show or something like that

I don't read fanfiction(completely because I don't have access to the internet nearly enough) but I think this thread could also be used to give ideas for fanfictions to good writers. I have several.

    DON"T READ THE FANFICS!

Well, actually, go ahead if you want to, but be warned: They may make you in to an Avatard Zutara fan.

    You have been warned.

I agree that the average book is orders of magnituted better than the best fanfic. However, very rarly it can surpass books, and if not they are an interesting writing exercise; using only other people???s characters and plots you have to create an interesting story of your own (harder to do than just making your own story). Click my profile and check my latest blog entry for some of the best Fanfiction on the net. By your Icon, I???ll bet you???re a Firefly fan, go read the Blue Sun Job by Guildsister now. It should be required reading for all Browncoats.

I have read every single suggestion you mentioned (I worked in a library for 5 years). In fact, I would like to add a couple suggestions to the list; The Giver by Lois Lowry (9.5 out of 10), The Black Cauldron and the Prydain Chronicles by Lloyd Alexander, Christopher Pike???s the Last Vampire (8.5 out of 10), Sabriel and Shade???s Chidren by Garth Nix (9.5 out of 10), Animorphs by K.A. Applegate (8 out of 10), and finally the His Dark Materials trilogy by Philip Pullman (10 out of 10)

On the Wheel of Time: very good series to start out, but the last three or so books have been a chore. Robert Jordan should have ended the series a long time ago.

If you are looking for a series that is kind of similar to Avatar, but in a higher age range, pick up Jim Butcher???s The Furies of Calderon or the rest of the Codex Alera series. If you???re just looking for the best book series of all time; check out Storm Front and the Dresden Files series by the same Author. Seriously check it out now.

You mean Firelord Azulon not Avatar Azulon right?

This is an excellent story; well crafted. It???s true that prequels are not my favorite form of fanfiction, but this one will be an exception.

phoenixfirework: Wow, thank you for all the suggestions! I can???t promise I will read them all, but I will defiantly read yours.

Oh, and I am a Zutara fan (don't think it will happen in the show, but it would be interesting), so I will probably very much enjoy RedNovembers work.
