Ever noticed (OK, you've noticed) how all of the animals in the show are comprised of some weird combination of two different species? (Turtle-ducks, ostrich-horses, etc.) I always thought it was kind of creative, what what bugged me was how they were always identified as such. To call something a 'turtle duck' in the avatar universe is to recognize the species as a composite of two different species, neither of which you'd have any familiarity with. A small detail, I know, and most would discount it as trivial. IMO, though, they should've either stuck with traditional animals or thought up of new names for their creations. Any thoughts?

Um this is extremely opinionated and not worthy of a thread?

    I agree with you

Maybe turtles, ducks, ostriches, horses, etc. used to be commonplace as seperate species, and then came the mutants of them, and they were named turtleducks, ostrich-horses, platypusbears, lionturtles, badgermoles, etc. And then all the original, seperate species either vanished from the earth and from popular knowledge, either through extinction or assimilation with the mutants, but the names remained, their meaning and origin forgotten, known only to dictionary writers and etymologists and exotic pet owners

I think that Teranef is right. I mean, they had just a plain bear. So, there must be hope for other species, right?

The reason you have names like that is to distinguish between the Platypus Bears, the Gofa Bears, and the just plain bears.

Makes me wonder why they never called a platypus a duck-beaver.

Because it has venemous spurs that could have come from a snake, and an electronic based "sixth sense" that most resembles the sonar system of a submarine. A creature that awsome deserves it's own name.

Orrrr it could be because they'd have to call a Platypus-Bear a Duck-Beaver-Bear, which is kind of a mouth full.

I think even the crickets stopped chirping.

Good try though. I can tell your heart is in the right place. Next time you try to make a joke, try to through in a random line about feces or perversion. Guaranteed funny.

Glad to see this is generating some discussion. On topic: I think they really missed out by not including an elephant-hyena. But maybe that's just me.

Bryke did that on purpose to add some humor in the show. They were freaked out by something common to us but very uncommon to them. We'd be freaked out too if the news headlines showed "Man was attacked by a Beartopus during traffic."
