No I believe the last airbenders are underwater. with help from the water tribe. Not hard to concieve. VERY VERY possible.

I've had the same thought (i'd take away those verys though) but in a different way. I mean in order sustain an air bubble like the one we see in the serpent's Pass (I take it that's where you're gettin it from) benders would have to be on standby 24/7, and the series has illustrated that bending can be draining. Even if they took turns or something it just wouldn't be convinient, and who know how many benders it would require. My thoughts, simply underwater air pockets.

Mabe the Fire Nation made the Earth Kingdom keep the airbenders underground Ba Sing Se, since Aapa and Jet are underground in Ba Sing Se, and Aapa is held captive, while Jet will be let free, since he was hypnotised that there is no war in Ba Sing Se.

Actually, the water benders could have freezed the water, but wouldn't they run out of air?

maybe it was a wandering waterbender. Or maybe someone tried to persuade the entire group to go and then only a few of them went to the air temples. I dont know it would work if they could find a cave under the water that led to an underground layer of sorts. possibly inhabited. they could eat fish, their would obviously have to be air. Just a Theory.
