I was wondering this when an airbender learns airbending and becomes a master does the arrow just appear or do monks just ink the body? If you know

    idk

its one of the great mysteries of the Avatar world. i mean when aang goes into the AS his arrows light up, so i doubt they're inked into the body. i mean why do the arrows light up when avatar airbenders go into the AS

i dont think its inked in. theres probably some sort of special material in the Avatar world which is used to make the tatoos.

considering only masters get tatoos... they probably have some special property which links them to the person's spirit or something

when do they say only masters get the tattoos?

I'm guessing the tattoos represent the flow of chakra

"Air Nomads who completed their training and became Masters of the art of airbending were given blue arrow tattoos on their head, back, arms and legs"

not sure how accurate the avatar wikipedia is... but that's what it says

it might be that the writers wanted to make Aang look more beastin than all the other avatars......cause it does look way cooler than just your eyes glowing.....i bet all the non air bending avatar's are like "come on man, i wanted my forehead to glow atleast." i bet if sokka was the avatar his forehead would glow from his palm-forehead contact over the seasons. especially in cave of two lovers, ahhhh, that hippie's songs were soothing

srsly, that's pretty much all there is to it. it's just an artistic choice to make them light up.
