    sozin was smart enuff 2 noe dat if one element was completely gone, then the balance of the world would be gone. he kept a few as prisoner and some 4 sure escaped. i mean they can fly! Wat do u think?

    The Airbenders are dead. The men who created the friggin' show even said so:

    MDD: Aang is the last Airbender, so I don't think it's possible for Airbending to spontaneously develop in the general population.

    Not only are they all dead, but they'll have to be slowly repopulated through Aang.

    Although yes, there will eventually have to be more airbenders because the Avatar cycle cannot continue without airbenders. But I think that all comes down to Aang.
