i kind of got to thinking today about how little we know about aang's childhood. no one ever really cleared up how aang was discovered as the avatar. i mean, they couldn't have checked every baby, they might have been able to make a guess, based on the birth of babies around the same time as the death of the previous avatar, etc. but still, we don't know about aang's parents, his home life, and a bunch of other stuff.

so basically, i got to thinking today, is it possible aang had a brother or sister? at first i thought twin, but that would probably be kind of a stretch since aang probably would have been raised with him/her to some extent until the monks could be sure who was the avatar and stuff like that. but i was just thinking what would happen if aang did have a brother or sister? could they have had a son or daghter aang could meet? could they themselves still be alive?

naw, it's known how aang was discovered as the avatar. Since Roku died, the next avatar in the cycle was an airbender, so the monks apparently allowed kids born around the time of Roku's death to pick out toys. Aang picked out the toys of the avatars, the ones of his past lives, and it's described in The Storm. Other than that I don't know much about his childhood, he became a master airbender when he was 10? I think he was the youngest ever or something along those lines.

well, yeah, i know about the toys. when i said "check every baby" that's what i was talkin about. but wouldn't you think they had to be a certain age for them to administer that test? i mean, you can't ask a newborn to pick out toys to decide their destiny. i'd say they had to have grown up maybe to be about one or two before that test was given to them. but even so, that's not the point. the point is, if aang never knew his parents, could he have had a brother or sister he knew nothing about as well?

i heard somewhere that another way they identified the avatar baby was by corresponding dates of birth to dates of death of the previous avatar (like in the same week, or something like that). if that's true then what happened to the babies who were deamed ordinary children? were they sent back to live with their families? were the children in aang's flashback in The Storm also avatar prospects? how is it decided who goes to live with the monks and who stays with their parents? this is probably a stretch, but could one of them have been aang's sibling (twin?) without him knowing it? maybe, maybe not, but i'm just putting up some ideas for speculation.

Wow, I'm surprised that only one other??person commented on this, it's pretty interesting. Well, I agree with you??that it??is??possible that Aang could??have had a brother or sister and I could??definitely see them still being alive. I mean Bumi is what, 112 years old and I think??the Guru is around 150, so in the Avatar World it seems like people can live for??a very long time. Also, like you said if Aang did have a sister/brother they could have had kids themselves, which would??make??Aang an uncle. Well,??I'm not sure if we will ever find out, but who knows maybe there will be an episode that reveals a lot more about Aang's??childhood in season 3.

although it would be interesting for people like us i am not sure that they would go to such great lengths. because of the plot moving forward i dont know if they would take a leap back, in case if it would clear up some stuff.

It's pretty clear to me that this is the last??season of??"Avatar: The Last Airbender" and it's going down in a trilogy...so this is the season where we'll probably learn all we want to know about what we don't know(that make sense)? So that way if they don't make a new season of Avatar(they'd have to start a new legend of course) and that's all she wrote then it won't be like "But we never found out about '____'" We'll see more about the Air Nomads in this season I'm sure of it

i think mostly we'll see more of the fire nation this season, though. the book title is probably going to be fire, and who is going to teach aang? i think we'll see a lot more of zuko's past (and i'm not complaining or anything), but as far as the air nomads go, i just want to know about aang's parents. his only parent-ish was gyatso, but he wasn't a blood relative, was he?

Patik is a guru with strong connections to the spiritual part of the avater world, him living to be 150 isn't that odd. Bumi I'd say is more of a fluke than anything, probably due to him keeping in shape and eating right his entire life, not to mention him enjoying what remains of his life (studies show that seniors who enjoy their life and have some excitement live significantly longer)

now look at Kanna (kataras grandmother). Pakku said in the waterbending master that she left 60 years ago, so considering the marrying age of the northern water tribe is about 16...that puts Kanna at a minimum of 76 years old, and she looks much worse than Bumi. So I wouldn't say everyone in the avatar world can reach 100+ years old.
