Aang had to detatch himself from earthly things (katara) in order to go into the avatar state. And this concept can't just be ignored because this was the very reason why ba sing se was given over, because aang couldn't go into the avatar state untill he went into the crystal cacoon thing and gave up katara then went into the avatar state. Sooooo, why was aang able to go inot the avatar state with still being attatched to katara, same goes for the water tribe avatar who lost his women to that face stealing spirit and roku with being able to go into the avatar state with having a wife.

Avatars must put the world before anyone else, but you can still love. Aang accepted that in S2 but right before he could unlock that final chakra, shoop da whoop, and down he went, blocking his last chakra from being open. Somehow hitting that rock unblocked it and bing bang boom, glow it up time was reinstated.

It may be the case that the Guru's technique was only the most effective way to enter and control the AS. Not necessarily the only way.

After all, Aang spontaneously entered into the AS several times to defend his life (or when he was just really pissed off)...which is what happened when he was fighting Ozai. Which means that Aang still hasn't really mastered the Avatar State.

no thats not what happened when he fought Ozai. The rock hit the spot where Azula shot him and then he gained control of it. If you noticed when he got shot with lightening they had the purple cosmic aang fade out and then the chain of avatars disappear. When he was fighting Ozai he got hit there again and the exact reverse of that happened. the Avatars came back and then the cosmic Aang came.

The cosmic aang is what tells us he mastered the avatar state, its what he was working up to with the guru....

EDIT: oh and what also tells us this is how he semi used the avatar state when putting out hte fires after spiritbending ozai...

Roku had a wife. Kuruk was a regular Casanova who eventually got married. Pathik was obviously wrong about Avatars needing to detach themselves from earthly attachments and or love to use the power of the Avatar State. Yangchen herself explains that the Avatar isn't meant to achieve nirvana but be an earthly hero. It's too bad Aang had to go into battle in Ba Sing Se with the completely wrong philosophical training for his type of job.

Could letting go of earthly attachments and unlocking the seventh chakra access the Avatar State? Probably. Is there another way? Obviously, or Yangchen, Kuruk, and Roku wouldn't have become fully realized Avatars. Aang apparently found the better way, which involves lethal danger and an "unbendable" spirit.

I don't think so, Aang can still love. All those other avatars loved for their spouse, it is just at the moment of the avatar state you need to let go. You don't have to detatch yourself when you want to get into the Avatar State. The seventh chakra apparently works differently than the other ones, although I could be wrong.

I think the major thing about the Avatar State is knowing when to let go, and when to focus on the battle at end.

Like Roku did with the volcano. Instead of just saving his wife, and ensuring her safety he went back to the volcano so that the other citizens could escape as well, and even temporarily entered the Avatar State.

yea, the Avatar state is a defense mechanism. and like maddo said, the chakra thing is just about mastering it.

..i think Roku says it, i don't remember.

No idea, but it's implied that he has complete mastery over the avatar state when his eyes flash white for a second before he puts out the fires left after he takes away ozai's firebending (it flashed the same way roku's, kyoshi's, and that other guy's did before they used awesome power).

    exactly, i stated that above!

dont forget the cosmic Aang from the Guru, it symbolizes the avatar state as well.
